Budapest Festival Orchestra Cocoa Concert, 2/23

Accessibility at Lincoln Center and the Budapest Festival Orchestra bring Cocoa Concerts, a family concert Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra has specially designed to include young people within the autism spectrum and their family members. This one-hour concert consists of brief classical-music movements, performed by members of the world-renowned orchestra, in an inclusive and supported environment. While the visual tools, music and communication techniques are created with children with autism in mind, all young people with disabilities are welcomed.
The Budapest Festival Orchestra puts its heart and soul into organizing programs accessible to everyone, seeking to bring children with autism and development disabilities into the magical world of music. Conductor Iván Fischer and the BFO have been performing their Cocoa Concerts for years, and it is an important mission for BFO as these events enable children to enjoy enriching activities and to experience the joy and power of music.
The orchestra’s musicians will perform in various chamber-music setups and will show, through the deft selection of music, the exciting things instruments can do and how much fun it is to play music together. Before introducing the musicians, Iván Fischer will explain the upcoming piece and what details are worth paying attention to.
Before the concert begins, all audience members will receive a handout detailing the instruments used and the program, as well as colorful stickers to mark the finished pieces after every ovation, helping everyone remain engaged during the concert.
Following the concert, families are invited to join the musicians for hot cocoa.
Recommended for children aged 5 and up and their families. This program is specifically designed for children with autism, however, all are welcomed.
This performance is free, but space is limited.

Behind the Sun, Above the Moon centers trans and non-binary Own Voices writers, which enables them to imagine alternative futures and create fabulist worlds for themselves. One-Act Play Festival, 2/24

The National Arts Club’s second annual One-Act Play Festival features short new works by notable playwrights – John Pielmeier, Steven Otfinoski, David Masello, among others – that examine the art of conversation. Each of the chosen works features two characters in dialogue, and it is through their talk that deep truths, conflicts, and resolution are reached. The plays, which will be performed this evening as staged readings, are a mix of the humorous, the poignant, the absurd. The “art of conversation” is practiced at its best in these works.

I would like to give a shoutout to u/thivnav for telling me about Flushing Town Hall. Also to u/mandonuts, for Public Theater (which should be here next week).
As a personal recommendation, I would suggest going to see Sorry to Bother You, which I thought was fantastic.
Again, you can search the events here. There are some more search filters. Notably, you can choose to omit public-run events (my GAD so many nypl events) and can filter for family-oriented events. Next week, I hope to have some keyword filters, and have a search that doesn't default to a map (think how Yelp lists restaurants when you search).
Cheers, until next week.

Who's Coding Our Future? Algorithms, Culture, Ethics: A Conversation With Judith Michelle Williams and Clive Thompson, 2/28

Join us and our partner creative tech organization, CTW for a conversation moderated by Isabel Walcott Draves about how computer programmers and their algorithms are shaping our world. First, we'll hear from Clive Thompson, Canadian science and technology writer for publications like The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, Wired and Entertainment Weekly. His book Coders: The Making of a New Tribe and the Remaking of the World explores the culture and influence of the programmers that increasingly impact so much of our daily lives. We'll pair him with Judith Michelle Williams, Senior Vice President, Global Head of People Sustainability & Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at SAP. Williams, who has also managed global diversity programs at Dropbox and Google, will offer deep insight into bias in the world of tech and the importance of diversity in software engineering teams. We'll round out the evening with a participatory discussion with the audience -- that's you! -- about your experiences interacting with algorithms, hidden influence, fairness, and who gets to create the culture of this coming age of Artificial Intelligence.
