A Beginner's Guide to RGB in 2021

It’s been years since my last totally new build, and wanted to share what I learned about making my new PC into a spectacular neon rainbow over the last month. My kids thought my old computer was "so boring" compared to my sister's so I knew I had to bring my A+ game with a rainbow explosion :)
I’ll start out by saying that figuring all this out has been by far the most confusing and frustrating part of my new build. Every time I thought I understood everything, there was always yet another exception to the rule. So don't feel bad if you feel like this is all super complicated and confusing, because it is! There's a TLDR is at the bottom.

The difference between RGB vs ARGB

The first and most crucial piece of information is that there are two types of “RGB” for PCs:
ARGB (also sometimes known as digital RGB) is far more flexible, can create way cooler effects, and it’s what most modern LED devices use. It's also a newer technology, so a lot of older "How to do RGB" posts/articles just assume you're using the 12V kind. Also you should never plug an ARGB 5V device into a RGB 12V header. Each type of device should be kept to its own type. Some photos comparing ARGB vs RGB headers can be found here.
What makes it very confusing is a lot of product listings and articles (like my post title!) just say "RGB" without specifying which type they're referring to until you dig deeper into the specs.

The different ARGB connector types

Adding to this cluster-mess is that most 5V 3-pin ARGB devices use a 4-pin footprint which have one of the pins left off so there's only 3 physical metal pins. But because nothing involving RGB is straightforward, there are also some ARGB devices that use a 3-pin footprint instead (JST-SM 3 pin). This image shows the two different ARGB connector types.
Because of this, some ARGB devices include a cable compatible with both types of ARGB headers. But other ARGB devices only provide one option and you'd need an adapter if it's the wrong type of your setup. This very important detail isn't always listed in the product description either because it’ll just say “3-pin Addressable RGB” without specifying which types of headers are supported, making it extremely frustrating and confusing. In an attempt to keep it clear in this document I’ll use the following abbreviations which I’ve made up just now (if there are better ones, let me know and I'll update):

How do I control all these lights?

Modern motherboards usually include both 5V ARGB and 12V RGB headers which can be used to control your lights via their respective motherboard utility software (MSI Dragon Center Mystic Light/ASUS Aura Sync/etc). These motherboard headers can be named a variety of things depending on the manufacturer. On my MSI board the 5V ARGB header is called JRAINBOW while the 12V RGB header is called JRGB. You can use both types of headers at the same time as long as you make sure to connect the correct type of (5V ARGB or 12V RGB) devices to their respective headers.
For ARGB, most motherboards (Asus/MSI/ASRock) use the 3P4F header for ARGB, but other motherboards (Gigabyte) use the 3P3F header for ARGB. However based on comments it looks like newer Gigabyte boards have moved to the "standard" 3P4F ARGB header which is good news. So check your mobo manual to confirm what it has. Yes, it’s a confusing mess.
Older motherboards might only have a 12V 4-pin RGB header or even more horrifying, no RGB header at all!!! We’ll cover what to do in that case a bit further down.
Making things even more complicated, some manufacturers created proprietary headers/protocols that plug into their own proprietary light controllers which are then controlled via USB. Corsair is the most famous example of this as their fans/lights will only work with Corsair's proprietary hubs which then talk to your PC via an internal USB header. Though as some comments have pointed out, you can buy adapters to get around this.
Corsair isn't the only one either, other "addressable RGB" manufacturers (NZXT for example) have decided to do their own thing with a proprietary connector and/or protocol that doesn't work well with anything generic, and it's often not obvious that's the case until you buy it and it doesn't work with the other stuff. If you keep to the same ecosystem it'll (usually) "just work" all together, but you'll limit yourself to a specific brand.
If you want LED devices that have more flexibility across brands to mix and match, look for the device product description to say "Compatible with MSI Mystic Light and Asus Aura Sync" which typically means it uses a generic 3P4F ARGB header. But there may be exceptions, so I can't 100% guarantee it'll work with your other devices and this is a huge reason why RGB can be such a headache.
Finally some fans or light strips or cases have no external connections - they can only be controlled by an included remote. The product descriptions sometimes aren't clear when this is the case, so you have to read the specs very carefully and read the reviews. Some devices provide both a remote and ARGB header connection and you hold down a button on the remote to switch between the two options.

How do RGB fans work?

The fans typically come with two cables connected to them: one for controlling the fan speed (like any other fan) and the other for controlling the LEDs. However some fans have a 3P4F header while other fans have a 3P3F header, and some fans provide both types of connectors. Also remember that double the cables, double the cable management!
There’s also some fan “kits” that come with an ARGB hub that all the fans ARGB cables plug into and then you can control the LEDs with a wired remote. This is more common if you buy a 2, 3, or 4 pack of ARGB fans together as one package. Also some fan kits have the ARGB cables plug into their specific proprietary hub, and then the hub has a single cable that plugs into the standard ARGB header for your motherboard.

I have 20 ARGB fans for my case and only 1 ARGB header, what do I do?

Most motherboards only come with one or two ARGB headers. You have a few options
  1. Use a simple splitter - Straight forward and cheap. You connect it to your motherboard's ARGB header. However whatever colopattern is used on the longest device will be the colopattern used for all the other devices connected to the splitter. So if you set a 12-LED pattern (like a rainbow) with three devices connected to the splitter - a 12 LED strip shows all 12, a 6 LED fan shows the first 6 of the pattern, and a 3 LED fan shows just the first 3 of the pattern. So all devices connected to the splitter will be mirrored. This may or may not matter to you based on how you want to light your system. Also each ARGB device has an amount of max current it could use, so you want to make sure the sum of all those devices hanging off the splitter is less than what your motherboard supports (usually around 3A).
  2. Some devices allow you to daisy-chain them together so you only need one motherboard header to connect multiple LED strips/fans (think of how your Christmas lights chain together). You'd have to determine if your particular device can do this as some devices have a connector to support this and some don't. It often has the same limitations as using a splitter with the mirroring. However as a commenter pointed out, that's not always the case depending on the device.
  3. Use a hub - Typically an ARGB hub works just like a splitter and is connected to your motherboard's ARGB header, but also includes a connection for power (usually provided by a SATA power connector from your PSU), so you can power more LEDs/devices than a splitter. But it still has the same mirror coloring limitation, which may or may not be important to you. Some fan kits (especially if you buy a 2 or 3 pack) come with a hub included.
  4. Use an ARGB controller - The most flexible option because each device you connect to the controller can have unique colors/patterns and won't have to be mirrored. It’s typically controlled via an internal USB header on your motherboard and does not use the ARGB header on the motherboard at all. It also allows you to control the lights without having to use the motherboard software. I went this route and *highly\* recommend it.
Keep in mind that there are also power limitations to consider. Some LED devices have their own SATA power connector to get around this limitation, while others just use the ARGB header 5V power which will then have a limit on how many fans/strips you can daisy chain or split off. That particular limit will be motherboard dependent (usually around 3A but you have to check your mobo manual for your specific board) and also dependent on the power draw of the LED devices. But the end result is that you can’t actually control 20 ARGB devices off a single ARGB header because the LEDs would get way too dim.

I don’t have a RGB or ARGB header on my motherboard, how can I turn my PC into a rainbow wonderland?

There’s two options:
  1. Make sure the LED device you’re interested in comes with its own remote. The drawback for a physical remote is that it might be complicated to get that remote outside your case if it’s a wired remote, so anytime you want to change the colors/patterns you would need to pop open your case. This may or may not be a big deal for you. There are some remote-only LED kits that use a wireless remote though, so you could search for those too.
  2. Buy specific hardware to control the LEDs like the Razer Addressable RGB controller I mentioned above which connects to your PC via an internal USB connector that almost all motherboards have.

My experiences with different devices:

There are 2 different main lines:
And then each line has two different versions:
I originally bought these not realizing that the normal non-Lux version only has a connection for a 3P3F header, which is not compatible with my motherboard or the Razer controller. You can buy the adapter separately for $5 a pop, so I bought that, but all 4 adapters were *super* loose on the ARGB header and would fall out of both the Razer controller and motherboard headers. I really wanted to like these, but I had to return them because it just didn’t work well at all. I was also super annoyed I had to buy an adapter and wait a week to ship because Phantek’s product description doesn’t make it clear at all that it’s not compatible with the standard 3P4F ARGB header.

Some last notes:

This is everything I wish I’d known when I started this whole process, so hopefully it can help someone else out too. I’ve always thought being a concert lighting engineer would be a fun job and this is the closest I’ll probably ever get. So while RGB isn’t for everyone (and just like Crossfitters and people who don't use Facebook, you don’t have to ask someone if they don't like RGB, they’ll make sure to tell you), I’m extremely happy I went all out on the RGB!

TLDR: Buy 5V Addressable RGB (ARGB) devices that use the standard 3-pin ARGB header in a 4-pin footprint (3 physical metal pins as one pin is left off) and get a Razer Addressable RGB Controller which connects to your motherboard’s internal USB header. Now you’ve got something that’ll work with almost any PC and almost all standard generic ARGB devices.

I am 42 years old making $72,000 living in Northern California and work as a Consultant

Section One: Assets and Debt
I am 42 years old making $72,000 as a Consultant. I live a debt free lifestyle, work part time, and am CFBC. I track with the median household income in my area, but it’s just me an my dog in a one income household. I grew up in a family that valued education but had no money to contribute to it, so I worked my way through college. I graduated with some student loan debt. I don’t have a family financial safety net and have not/will not inherit anything, but also do not need to financially support my family. I took a purposeful step back in my career after growing into a management position and realizing that it was not what I wanted to do. Now I make the bulk of my income doing the work I love. Pre-Covid I traveled quite a bit for fun, both internationally and in a camper van. I have tried working while traveling and neither was rewarding, my job permits me to separate the two and I do not work when I travel. I have struggled with that during Covid, because what is the point of working less if you can’t do anything fun with your free time?
My Covid pod is a married couple, another single women, and a new boyfriend that I started dating this summer. He is kind, creative, a good listener, and brings me coffee in bed. The boyfriend, from here on dubbed the King of Coffee (KoC) has his own place, but for a while was spending weeks at a time at mine. We recently both decided to refocus and be more effective, so he is spending ½ his nights at his own place. We do not combine expenses.
Retirement: 243K - I have 237 K between two employer sponsored 401K’s and another 6K in a Roth IRA. I’m trying to catch up and would like to make the max contribution this year but an struggling with motivation.
Equity: 0 -I’m renting. I lost about 80K in equity in a home during an unfortunate break up a few years ago and am happily renting. It sucked to walk about from 15 years of equity, and have to start from scratch on a down payment fund, but sometimes your freedom is worth it. I was able to cash flow legal fees to emerge debt free.
Savings account balance: 900
Checking account balance: 13,000, I keep my emergency fund in my checking account. I like my money like I like my wine, liquid.
Credit card debt (and how you accumulated it): 0, I use my cards and pay them off very month.
Student loan debt (for what degree): 0, paid off 21K in loans about 10 years ago for a Bachelors Degree
Section Two: Income
Main Job Monthly Take Home: 3,264 (variable)
I've been working in my field for 18 years, my starting salary with a Bachelor’s degree was $23,000 (a pay decrease from my college jobs). I was up to 109K for a few years in my 30’s. But I woke up fat and miserable, so took a step back. I now work part time as an employee for a couple of different companies with a ton of autonomy and the ability to take on the work I love to do. I average the same per hour, but work a lot less hours. California state law prevents most companies from hiring me as a 1099 employee, which is fabulous, because it makes my life really simple. I fill out a timecard with my hours and they deposit money in my bank account. It’s like magic! I primarily work for one company, and they pay for my health insurance premiums, which is a huge benefit vs when I was spreading my time more evenly among multiple jobs and purchasing health insurance out of pocket. I also net between 4-7K a year on a side gig that is 1099 contract wor.
Main Job Monthly Take Home: $2,964, per month My primary job is somewhat seasonal. My take home varies a lot as I am not guaranteed hours, and sometimes choose not to take on projects with work that I don’t love. This is netted wages from my primary job over the yea12. Month to month it can be more or less.
Side Gig Monthly Take Home: $300 per month (averaged). 1099 contractor work. My gross is about 12K a year for this, but there is a ton of overhead and taxes ($3,600 per year in broker fees, $3,400 business fees, office space, mileage for this job, and other business expenses). I allow this side business to pay for my phone, office space, etc.
Section Three: Expenses
Rent: $1,050, I’m silly lucky to have rented a dated 1 bed/ 1 bath flat in a great area before prices skyrocketed. My landlord that has not kept up with market rate. After being a home owner, I love not having to mow the lawn, worry about the gutters, or fix anything. Market for this unit would be around $1,850. Current California rent controls ensure my rent will not raise more than 6% this year.
Renters / home insurance: $12
Savings contribution: 0, nothing budgeted, my income is variable so my account ebbs and flows. I sweep any extra money over 15K from my checking into my savings, and start to panic if my balance gets below 12K. I have been a scattered spender and lacked focus for the last year.
Debt payments: $0
Donations.$50 a month, Average between the local food bank, individual fundraisers for homeless outreach, go fund me, and local non-profits.
Electric: $55 (average)
Natural Gas: $50 (average)
Cellphone: $30* (this is my portion of an unlimited data, talk, text on a family plan with a friend, I write this off against my 1099 income)
Gym membership: $89, this is a small family owned gym that I love. I kept my membership active during the Covid shutdown which was objectively a waste of money, and just started going back to their classes (done outdoors in compliance with local regulations)
Pet expenses: $140, this is the average for food, flea and heartworm meds, and one scheduled vet visit a year, and one unscheduled. In the past it has been less, but the last couple of years vet costs have gone up for my aging pup, and will likely continue to rise.
Car payment: $0, I saved to buy a new (used) car in cash for 15K early last year. It is a great car, and should last me 5-8 years without looking like a beater.
Car insurance:$130, this is for a camper van, a car, and a motorcycle. I pre-pay for the 6-month policy.
Gasoline: $200 (I get some of this back but will get to that).
Groceries: $300, I’m not great about sticking to this
Wine Club: $30, I cancelled a wine club because we can’t go wine tasting due to COVID, and then immediately signed up for another one, so there is that.
Coffee: $30, yes, this is just for coffee at home. I purchase beans from a local farmer owned co-op because it’s important to me.
Eating Out: $120, this is really variable, I used to spend more, and our COVID lockdown just loosened a bit so I have been meeting with my pod for outdoor dining/happy hour more often.
Toiletries and home goods: $30
Clothes: $75
Other Business expenses: $312. If I’m counting that gig income I should probably count the expenses. Professional licensing fees for my primary job: $38 ($450 once a year), Professional registrations for side job: $75* ($900 once a year, write off against 1099 income). Office space rental: $199* (this one kills me but I’m locked into a year-long contract on this, it includes copies/printing/wifi/coffee etc and is a great workspace, but has been unusable most of the year due to COVID, write off against 1099 income)
So that’s what I "plan" to spend money on, lets see how I do.
Wednesday: Daily Total $81.11
The KoC stayed over, so that means I get coffee in bed (see above budgeted expensive coffee). I had to run off to work, so he also walked the dog. We started to date about 6 months ago and he is a gem and really starting to grow on me.
Grabbed gas at Costco on my way to work $50.90. My car takes premium, it’s $3.22 a gallon, and I get about 20 miles to the gallon. About ½ of the miles I drive on this tank will be reimbursed at 56 cents a mile by my primary employer, so I will get reimbursed about $89 on this tank. The mileage rate is also suppose to account for wear and tear, which is much harder to calculate. My tires are almost brand new, but when I had to replace one it was $260! This car is much more expensive to drive them my previous vehicles.
At lunch I ran to a sporting goods store to look for snow pants to go to the snow this weekend. Dang they are expensive, maybe I can do without, or find some at a thrift store? I popped into the grocery store for food for lunch and walked out with a giant bag of pumpkin seeds, 3 avocados, a couple jars of Paleo BBQ Sauce, some pecans, beef jerky, and a couple protein bars ($30.21).
I get home and the dog has successfully extracted all of the trash from both the bathroom and kitchen trash can. I proceed to vacuum up shreds of paper and am reminded that the nozzle on my vacuum is broken (functional, but you have to hold it together).

Thursday: Daily Total $57.19
The weather is awful and I decide not to go into work, and instead worked on technical reports from home. I hate reports and only ended up billing about 3 hours. But I don’t have to worry about snow pants anymore because at the end of the day I get offered another 8 hours of the work I love so do, so now I get to work the weekend. I found a broken vacuum on FB marketplace for $30 and go pick it up. Apparently, all purple Dysons are not the same model. The parts are not interchangeable. I need to pay better attention. Now I have two broken vacuums. Doh!!
A friend called to see if I wanted to grab dinner. We choose a spot with a cozy patio. The City has temporary suspended metered parking fees due to COVID. I bring a blanket. I got an entrée and a glass of wine, my total with tip and tax is $27.19.

Friday: Daily Total $174.58.
Coffee delivered to my bed again! Went back to the gym from the second time this year. It just reopened under revised COVID restrictions this week. Classes are outside and masks are required, but it still feels strange. I justify it because I just haven’t been doing the weight training I should on my own, and the cold weather has really stalled my outdoor cardio workouts. Packed a lunch and just worked through lunch. Had to apply to renew one of my professional permits ($136.90)
Stopped at the grocery store on my way home onions, cucumbers, a shitload of broccoli, two heads of cauliflower (one organic and one not, why are these the same price? Is there a size difference? Better get them both and figure it out later), two lbs of grass fed ground beef that are on-sale and a rack of ribs ($37.68)
Had roasted broccoli and tea for dinner, and worked on a report for a non-profit board I’m on. Went on an audio book checkout/download spree using my public library app and started listening to the “Happiness Project.”

Saturday: Daily Total $10.37
Off to work because of the earlier lack of productivity. Had to stop by CVS and purchase some supplies for the office $10.37 (my employer will reimburse me for this). Packed some leftover chili con carne and a jar of snackies (see aforementioned groceries, pumpkin seeds, pecans, and beef jerky). Zoomed into a 7-hour annual meeting for the non-profit board while working.
Done by 4 pm. I’m sore from the workout yesterday. Everything hurts. I get home and am started to soak in a lavender epsom salt bath while listening to my audiobook when I get a call from a friend. She had a rough day and is wondering if I have time for dinner. I abandon my lovely bath and rally.
We split a bottle of wine, I have a cookie but decline to share her pizza since I’m “trying” to eat better. My friend insists on paying. I let her, but I feel bad. I am hyper sensitive to carrying my own weight since I am choose to make less and be relatively stress free while they work long hours. I don’t want to let that get in the way of my friendships. I never say I don’t have the money to do something fun.

Sunday: Daily Total $60.50
I run back into work to finish some things, but am supposed to be done early for a lunch date with the KoC. I call on my way home to make sure he will be ready to go by because I’m starving and we are planning on walking. He is sort of ready to go, and we walk the dog about a mile to my favorite café, which also just opened for outside dining. It is a beautiful day, my food takes forever. I get a giant noodle salad and drink water, it’s $14.35, but the KoC pays. This is the second meal he has purchased for me in 6 months, the first being our first date. He is always up for a long walk around the neighborhood, which I love. He is not well employed, and we don’t eat out much. He eats a lot of my groceries, and when he is with me at the grocery store will sometimes Venmo me $20. I have found myself purchasing more things he likes recently.
On our walk back, I get a text that some friends are at a local brewery. We redirect our walk. The KoC takes one look at the crowd (outside and at separate tables, but it’s still more people than we have seen in months) and asks if I mind if he just heads back to my place. No worries. The puppers and I flag down my friend, we decide we are also not comfortable with the crowd and head to a nearby Café. I repeat the bottle of wine ($18) and cookie ($3.75) from the day before, my portion of the bill is $15.50 with tax and tip. She insists on sending the rest of the bottle of wine home with me.
For dinner the KoC and I have a game night date in a friend’s yard. She has a lovely yard with twinkly lights and provides heated blankets and heat pads for each of us. We distance and wear masks when not eating/drinking. We finish the rest of the bottle of wine I brought from the Café, a bottle of port from my wine club (accounted for in wine club budget, $25), and order sushi for delivery (I Venmo her for my portion, $20). No games are actually played, but it’s nice to catch up.

Monday: Daily Total 0.
I sleep through the 6 am gym class. Chat with a friend about nailing down reservations and hiking permits for some national parks this summer and apply for the lottery. I have a few client calls in the morning. I have poor work hygiene and work from by bed most of the morning. The dog doesn’t get out of bed until noon, At least I beat her. Had breakfast for lunch, farm fresh eggs from a friend and a few slices of bacon. Got myself together enough for a zoom meeting in the afternoon, and ducked off-line early to hit the 5pm class at the gym. I roast a boat load of broccoli for dinner and have more nuts/seeds/ sugar free chocolate as snacks. KoC stops by late after he is done with work and eats the rest of the broccoli. He stays over. I’m getting coffee in bed tomorrow.

Tuesday: Daily Total 0.
Just as I suspected, coffee in bed. We wake up early and spend some time chatting in bed since I’ve been a little unavailable the last few days. He goes for a run, showers, and brings me tea while I work on a report before taking off to start his day. We are both trying to be more effective with our time and part of that is hard deadlines ending our time together. I bill 8 hours, make myself lunch, and never leave the house.
For dinner I ate the equivalent to a whole head of roasted cauliflower and slow roasted the ribs from the earlier shopping trip. If you are wondering, there is no flavor difference between the organic and non-organic, the non-organic head is a bit larger. I rice the cauliflower stems in the blender and toss the cauliflower rice in fridge to sauté with some ground beef for another meal later. I knit while listening to my audiobook. I have a lifetime supply of yarn so it’s a no spend hobby.

Wednesday: Daily Total 0.
I signed up for the 7am class since I slept through 6 am on Monday. Everything hurts from Monday’s workout. The KoC hand ground my coffee, set out the pour over, and filled the kettle before he left last night, so I just need to hit the power on the kettle and pour over.
Weekly Total: $383.75
Food + Drink: $155.58
Fun / Entertainment:0
Home + Health:$30
Clothes + Beauty: 0
Transport: $50.90
Other: Work expenses, $147.27
Reflections:
I’m trying to spend less on crap. I have way to many clothes, but always seem to be able to justify small clothes and food spending. I did a good job on these things this week. The reopening of restaurants, combined with the nice weekend weather led to more eating out then I’ve done in months. Pre-Covid, a large portion of my spending was social eating, happy hours, drinks with friends, dinners out, and I have used that for justification for buying more food for home in recent month.
My income and expenses are messy and difficult to categorize. Some work expenses I pay out of pocket, and some transportation expenses are recovered as a reimbursable. My savings account says I’m treading water, and not making progress towards additional saving for a house. That’s not horrible given the current Covid situation, but it’s also not great, since there is less social spending opportunities so I should be making progress.
My life is easy and stress free with time to do the things I love when I had the motivation. I worry if I am making/saving enough to maintain it in the long run? I struggle with the worry that I am not working hard enough or saving enough to secure my retirement. I'm saving 18K a year towards retirement (401K and Roth). Housing costs continue to skyrocket and I am also fearful that I am not keeping up income/asset wise with the COL in my area or my peers. Oh, and I miss traveling.

Health/Dental/Vision insurance: I’m still on my parents’ plan
YNAB: $85 (yearly)
New Yorker: $150 (yearly)
Bon Appetit: $30 (yearly)
Was there an expectation for you to attend higher education? Did you participate in any form of higher education? If yes, how did you pay for it?
Absolutely. Both of my parents have masters in engineering and it was always expected I go to college. I got a bachelors in Chemical Engineering. I had about $10k saved from working at a nice restaurant in high school and spent almost all of that on my housing for my first year and my parents paid tuition of ~11k. Sophomore and junior year I worked as an RA so my housing cost was only about $3k (although I did get a stipend of $170/month) and my parents paid that and tuition. Senior year I paid the 3k for housing and my parents paid tuition.
Growing up, what kind of conversations did you have about money? Did your parent/guardian(s) educate you about finances?
Not that many. My parents are both definitely spenders and I don’t think they ever actively encouraged me to save. I saved up so much in high school simply because I didn’t have much to spend it on and I liked working. If I asked my mom if I should buy this or that item she always encouraged me to get it. There was never a discussion of affordability or planning. I educated myself on most of the things I know now.
What was your first job and why did you get it?
I got my first job a few days after I turned 16 at a nice seafood restaurant. I started as a hostess then worked through every position except bartender. I got the job because my parents gave me a small allowance of I think $20/week and I felt bad asking for money for larger things. I wanted to have money to buy more clothes and go out to eat with friends. I became a workaholic though and by my senior year usually worked 25 hours a week on top of AP classes and lots of extracurriculars.
Did you worry about money growing up?
Not really. My parents always had good jobs and there was never a feeling of scarcity.
Do you worry about money now?
This is a tough question to answer. I’m really fortunate to be making such a high salary at such a young age. I’m really trying to find the balance of saving a good amount but also allowing myself to enjoy my salary. It always feels like I could be saving more but also like I could treat myself to some nice things. I use YNAB and keep a close eye on my budget and meticulously track my accounts.
At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself and do you have a financial safety net?
I moved out for my first job in August 2019 and took on all of my expenses then except medical/dental/vision insurance. I definitely have a financial safety net in my parents. My mom offered to let me move home if I did a grad program in Houston or help with living expenses if I went to a different city. I know they would support me if I had a job loss or some other emergency. Besides that, I have a healthy emergency fund.
Do you or have you ever received passive or inherited income? If yes, please explain.
I believe I received some bonds from a relative when I was younger. My parents gave me an allowance my first year in college.

Saturday, February 6

Morning: I wake up relatively weekend-early at 8 am. I made dough for a babka last night so I make the filling (cinnamon-pecan), assemble it and leave it to proof. I drop off my half-full bucket of veggie scraps in the compost bin at my community garden. Then I walk 20 minutes to Whole Foods and get an eggplant, red bell pepper, bacon, and canned jackfruit. $20.91 I make a yummy breakfast hash with sweet potatoes, bacon, onion, and green and red bell pepper. Also the babka - delicious :)
Afternoon: I head over to the Menil, one of my favorite museums! It’s luckily very empty and I wander the main building for about an hour then the drawing institute and Dan Flavin installation. Finally, I take a short walk to Meredith Gardens. After I drive to Eastern Glades to walk around for a bit.
Evening: I decide to try something new for dinner. I order a ton of stuff from Cowboys and Indians: achari bhindi with shrimp, veggie samosas, and masala fries. There’s definitely lots of leftovers. $38.02 I watch Molly’s Game then read a bit.

Sunday, February 7

Morning: I have a late start to the morning and wake up at 10. I eat leftover hash and babka. I decide to have a nice city day and grab a Mexican hot chocolate at Campesino. $4.75 I then head into downtown Houston and just wander around looking at all the buildings (particularly in historic downtown) for a few hours. I talk with my mom for a bit about their Super Bowl plans.
Afternoon: I have a tradition of trying different poke restaurants every Sunday so I head to Local Poke on Washington. On the way, I pass a beautiful cemetery (Glenwood/Washington) and decide to stop in (Is this too macabre?) It’s actually so lovely and I spend a little time wandering around. I head home to eat and watch 7 episodes of Broad City season 3. P.S. Rating on the poke is 7/10. I disliked the sauce I got and had a few pieces of fish with too much tendon but they had a ton of great toppings. $14.05
Evening: Feeling the Sunday scaries and decide to do a little sketch of the design for my Valentines cards which I need to finish soon! I order 2 books from Thriftbooks: Odes to Common Things by Pablo Neruda and Paradise Lost/Paradise Regained by John Milton. I read before bed and turn in at 11. $25.43

Monday, February 8

Morning: I wake up at about 8:30 and log in for work. I check emails while I eat breakfast: a slice of sourdough bread with avocado and a scrambled egg. I’m pretty light on meetings today so I mostly deal with the usual avalanche of Monday emails and ticking off small tasks from my list I made Friday.
Afternoon: I break at 1 to chat with an old professor-turned friend from college. Afterwards, I get very engrossed in work and don’t end up eating until 2:30. I have dinner plans at 6:30 so I just have a small portion of the leftover Indian food. I finish up work at 6 and leave for dinner.
Evening: I meet my 2 closest friends at a Rouxpour, a Cajun restaurant. We sit outside (and are the only ones outside…) We chat for about 2.5 hours about work, music, relationships, etc. They are my oldest friends and we have kept in touch all throughout Covid. I pay and they immediately Venmo me. We split several dishes - chargrilled oysters, crabcakes, a crazy burger (with an onion ring, potato pancake, shrimp, bacon, and more!), and pasta. I also have a glass of rose. My portion is $42.76 I get home close to 10 and finish up one last task I left downloading for work. I read In Other Words by Jhumpa Lahiri before bed at about 11:30.

Tuesday, February 9

Morning: I wake up pretty late again at 8:30. I skip breakfast, and the morning is uneventful.
Afternoon: I have an early lunch at 11 of the leftover Indian food. I watch about 15 minutes of an episode of Broad City then scroll Instagram and Reddit. Work for the rest of the afternoon until about 5:30. I decide to get BWW for dinner. Despite all the eating out I’ve done, I still justify it because I didn’t prep any food this weekend and have little time before class to cook what I had planned. Happily, they have a BOGO deal today so it’s not too expensive. I chop up some vegetables, throw them in the oven to roast then go pick up my food. $12.75
Evening: Quickly eat half the wings and chat with my grandpa for a bit. I then log into my art class. It’s a drawing class (virtual) through a local art school. I love having this dedicated time (3 hours once a week) and the instructor is so sweet. I assemble and bake a veggie lasagna after class is done. I also talk with my mom, clean the kitchen and pick up around my apartment then shower. I read for a bit then head to bed at 11:30.

Wednesday, February 10

Morning: I’m up pretty early at 7:30. I have a busy morning of 3 back-to-back meetings then get roped into a 3-hour long discussion trying to dig through code with 2 developers then finally talk with someone who had messaged me a few hours ago. By the time this is done it's 12:45 and I never even got around to breakfast. I quickly break for 15 minutes and scarf down leftover wings and text with my mom.
Afternoon: Back at 1 pm for a 2-hour long meeting where I get a lot of questions answered then another short meeting and now its 3:30 pm. This has truly been a marathon day - I’ve been on the phone pretty much nonstop. I take some notes and close out a few items then log off at 4:00 pm.
Evening: I go for a walk at the Arboretum with a friend from college: outside and masked. There aren’t many people around but it’s a bit cold and cloudy. I get home at 6:15 and heat up some lasagna. I eat while watching Broad City and just end up watching TV most of the night. I’m making pozole this weekend and realize I don’t have the right chiles so I order dried ancho chiles from Walmart. I also order a stainless steel knob for my dutch oven. I broke my current knob and had honestly been wanting to replace it with stainless steel which can withstand the high temperatures for making bread. $24.75 I read a New Yorker story and go to bed by 11 pm.

Thursday, February 11

Morning: I wake up at about 7:45 and sit through a forum for the first 1.5 hours of the day followed by a project meeting. I make avocado toast with a scrambled egg for breakfast. It’s another busy morning trying to work out items from the developer and get feedback on the technical side. I have a meeting 12-1 so I heat up a slice of lasagna afterwards and work while eating.
Afternoon: More meetings in the afternoon and trying to close out items. I’m trying to balance so many things it feels like I just bounce back and forth between tasks and never finish anything. I send off a document to a coworker to review and take a break at 4:45. I scroll on my phone for a bit and debate if I want to eat lasagna for dinner or scrounge up something to eat. I decide to order a pizza from Star Pizza (reasonably good deep dish). I get a large so it can last through the weekend. I then hop back on my work laptop to watch a video, type up a post about it, then do a bit of research and send a last email. I put on Bling Empire in the background but I don’t really understand if it’s an actual reality TV show or simulated reality?? The pizza arrives and I wrap up work shortly after at 6:45. $32.84
Evening: I eat 3 slices of pizza while watching Broad City. The leftovers will last 2 more meals. I can’t remember what I did for the rest of the night. Probably just TV and some reading.

Friday, February 12

Morning: I wake up at 8:30. Smoothie for breakfast with spinach, goji berries, grated ginger, oat milk, a bit of honey and old fruit: a super brown banana, sad strawberries, and a punctured pear. I have a meeting at 11 but it’s a casual meeting so I eat lasagna with camera on lol
Afternoon: A few more meetings in the afternoon. I take a 30 minute break since I didn’t take lunch. Now it’s 2:45 pm and the Friday afternoon slump is hitting me so I make a cup of green tea and put on an R&B playlist to help me power through. It’s finally quiet and I can do some modeling work and dig through more tedious issues. A work friend calls me and we chat for about 30 minutes. I keep working until 6 pm and am finally able to get a lot done. I take a brief 5-minute break to get a free bottle of wine from my apartment office for valentines day (They give away 3 buck chuck at all their events but its still 3 bucks I didn’t have to spend.) I make my to-do list for next week and log off!
Evening: I heat up leftover pizza for dinner (cast iron on the stove with a few drops of water, lid on *chefs kiss*) I start watching Broad City and then catch up with my mom. I make a to-do list for the weekend and make a meal plan/grocery list. With a big cold front coming in, I want to stock up and cook some food so I’ll do less eating out next week.
Total Spending: $216.26
Food+Drink: $174.08
Entertainment: $25.43
Home+Health: $16.75
Reflection: This was a high week for eating out. If I plan and batch cook on the weekend I will eat things that I prepared. I’m pretty burnt out on cooking though so I’m usually not motivated to cook mid-week. Besides that this is mostly how my pandemic life has looked. Lots of TV and chilling on the couch with only outdoor dining and mostly outdoor activities. I have found it hard to work out at home but I would like to try to find more ways to be active. Thanks for reading :) Happy to answer questions in the comments.

PSAs for Stadia Cyberpunk 2077 + new country newcomers

There's only a few hours left until Cyberpunk 2077, so I thought I'd make a post for people using Stadia for the first time due to the promo and the new countries that have been added. Feel free to ask stuff in this sub - people are quite helpful here - and welcome to the community!
Do I need the Premiere bundle to play on Stadia?
No, the Premiere bundle is only the official method of playing on a TV. You can play Stadia on your desktop browser using your keyboard/mouse or a controller and you can play on your mobile devices using a controller. Android users can download the Stadia app from the Play Store. Official iOS support is on the way, but there are alternative methods.
When will I receive my free Premiere bundle for purchasing Cyberpunk 2077?
If you pre-ordered the game, you should receive a code in your email within the next week (by December 17). You can also still receive a free Premiere bundle if you order within the next week. Codes will be, at the latest, sent by mid-January. Keep your eyes peeled! As far as I'm aware, we don't know in what order the codes will be sent or how long "supplies will last."
How will Cyberpunk 2077 perform and look on Stadia?
We won't know until the game releases in a few hours. I think others have stated here that Stadia typically performs similar to, if not better than, the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X, but it comes down to how well the developer optimizes the game.
Is there a monthly payment for using Stadia?
There are 2 tiers of Stadia: the base tier and Stadia Pro. Any game that you purchase, you can play without a subscription - such as Cyberpunk 2077. Yes, that's right, it's like having free gaming hardware that you can take anywhere. The base tier tier, however, is limited to a resolution of 1080p. If you would like 4K, HDR, and 5.1 surround sound, you can subscribe to Stadia Pro. This brings me to Pro games.
How do Stadia Pro games work?
On the 1st of each month, Stadia offers games for Stadia Pro subscribers to claim for free. Once you claim a game, you can play it as long as you are subscribed to Pro - even if it leaves the current Pro game lineup. If you cancel your Pro subscription, you temporarily lose access to any claimed games. If you resubscribe you can go right back to playing them where you left off. This means that the longer you stay subscribed to Pro, the more games you accumulate over time. Games that leave the Pro lineup do not leave Stadia, they can always be purchased just like any other game.
Are there sales on Stadia?
Oh yes, there are plenty of sales on Stadia. For example, you can pick up the Borderlands 3 Ultimate Edition right now for $10.99 USD. All members (whether base tier or Pro) get access to the sales, which are usually updated on Tuesdays. Another perk of Stadia Pro members is often a larger sale on some deals.
Can I return games on Stadia?
Yes, if the game was purchased less than two weeks ago and you have played less than 2 hours of it, you can request a refund.
Why am I experiencing lag or input delay?
Each person's experience with Stadia is primarily dependent on their home internet setup or internet service provider. The minimum internet speed is 10 Mbps for 720p and 35 Mbps for 4K, but anything from a faulty router to other people streaming content can impact your gameplay. The golden rule is Chromecast Ultra plugged into ethernet. If you're playing over Wifi, try to use the 5 gHz band. If you're on your desktop browser, turn off location services and check if your computer is capable of decoding VP9. The Stadia Help Center is a great troubleshooting website. I have played hundreds of hours on Stadia with ~60 Mbps over Wifi and I can't tell that it's being streamed at all.
Also, as many of you may be aware, reviewers have noted bugs and issues with Cyberpunk 2077. If you are not sure whether any issues are being caused by your internet or the game, hold down the Stadia capture button (F12 on keyboard) for a few seconds. This saves a 30s video clip straight from the Stadia server to your account. If the glitch you noticed is also in the video, it was probably an issue on the game/Stadia's end. If the glitch is not in the video, check your internet setup!
Have fun!
Those are just some questions I've seen people are often confused about, so feel free to share this post. I've been on this sub for most of this year and have put hundreds of hours into Stadia, and the entire experience has been awesome. So have fun, tell your friends, and enjoy!
EDIT: u/inan0812 made a great point that if you would like to test out your network and setup prior to Cyberpunk 2077 releasing, you can play Destiny 2 completely free (no subscription needed) on Stadia and see how smooth it is.

7 unusual reasons you don't get results[IMPORTANT] (4 years experience) (Long) (TRIGGER)

Hey there. I am a veteran in the sub community for 4 years. There are things you need to consider in order to get results. Here are 7 unusual reasons that tie each other why you DONT get results. I have helped many people on getting their results who also tried for YEARS. These tips will work if you are also on a rut , a period where u got Sub results and then suddenly stopped
  1. You use subliminals primarily for solving problems.
Why is that a problem? Simple. Subliminals are a tool that helps to solve your problems. Subliminals are not magic. All you do is transferring Energy from A to B.
To solve it: Use Subliminals that you don't give a slightest F about, like enhanced sleep, eat healthier etc. You detach from these topics because they are casual, yet they are neglected a lot despite their importance
You should invest in topics that brings you further!! Also don't replace subliminals with medications as the attachment is too fucking big, I healed Haemorrhoids BUT I also supported it with nurtrition.
View Subliminals as Gaming mods, or body modifications frpm cyberpunk. That way you actually have fun using Subliminals.
Nice you did it, 6 lessons more
  1. Energetic debt aka. Bad vibes. Neglecting Vibrations
Nothing comes out of anything. If so, Subs would be too good, to be true. And after lots of attempts to fix a nose, you fail. Everything has its cost. Our currency is ENERGY its either positive or negative energy.
Its like a wifi connection, the better the wifi, the faster the download. If you listwn to Subs for the sake of society your vibes are neutral and takes longer. If you listen due to self hatred you might get the opposite of your desire or no results at all.
If you listen with gratitude, self-love, guess what. YOU GET RESULTS. Very fast.
You either have positive or highly negative energy.
Sources for positive energy: -Eat Whole vegetables and fruits -Drink water - Sleep a lot (I don't do it either, fuck online class) -Go outside (I don't do it either haha) -Do sports -Stop comparing yourself to others. Why the fuck you wanna go someone's else Path?! We are all unique -honest gratitude -Selfinvestment -Theta waves -Sea Salt -Enhancing/vibing music (although it has bad lyeics, nostalgia and boss feelings matter more, 2pac and KOLLEGAH for the win) -Meditation
negative sources: - PORN / MASTURBATION -excess Fastfood -excess Sleep deprivation - A MALE CARING FOR BEAUTY. BE A FUCKING ALPHA or Sigma -excess artifical Sugar -Social Media (esp. Tiktok and Instagram ) - You care what others (people you hate, don't know etc.) think of you (esp. as a male) -You are a nationalist, (a pathetic scum who is proud of something he did not achieve for) . WE ARE ALL HUMAN or racist or both -News, they are all a source of negativity -Drugs . Alcohol etc -Being a Nice guy -People pleaser -League of Legends (holy shit)
You can do these negative shit. But in small amounts. I just eat lots of fastfood but to get my calories off and compensate it with HARDCORE home workouts.
Instead of news... Just do things you actually can change in terms of productivity
And on beauty shit. Trust me. Females put way more value on confidence, hygiene and character rather than beauty. Its the females job to be beautiful. (Dont wanna sound sexist btw. just using common sense from Evolution (Biology)).
If you listen out of self hatred, you download results with a shitty wifi. Its slow as fucking hell. But. If you listen subliminals for fun. It is speed
And on Porn. Don't YOU REALIZE HOW PATHETIC YOU ARE.?! I did it. AND I REGRET IT. Watching some pixels on a screen how an unrealistic woman gets fucked?! Then grab your dirty fingers and touch it EWWWW. I am 125+ days out of this shit. YOU GET ATTRACTED TO PIXELS?! Thats way too unnatural. And your brain gets adapted to it. No matter how much you fucking know about it. We are governed by emotions, not by rational thinking.
Just imagine YOUR DAUGHTER is together with a crippling porn addict WTF.
WOAH SO BRAVE, it was so fucking long, drink water and enjoy these 5 tips
  1. Your Ego is bigger than the whole world combined.
What is ego? Ego is like a damn locker of your potential. Your ego is made to protect yourself. Its uncomfortable to dissolve it. Being right is more comfortable than doing things.
On Subliminals. Just be fucking open. Dont look or wait for scientific evidence. Just get your fucking ass up and listen. Are you seriously worth of scientific evidence?! Are these Subliminal comments paid?! If yes. Holy moly. Submakers would be the modern Rothschilds ;)
And btw. we are all human :D
Woah we got only 4 more left, take notes. Drop the ego and get started right now. Knowledge without usage is WORTHLESS
  1. Fear of making mistakes
I know. I did shit tons of mistakes. Dont seek perfection. Its a waste of time. 20% of your subliminals will reach 80% of your fulfillment.
Focus on important stuff. First comes important stuff, then regular stuff. And then stuff for fun.
Playlist example: Booster 2x School 5x Booster 2x Selflove 3x High vibrations 3x 2x Booster 3 x Grow taller
Invest your energy. Dont waste it ;) but spend it.
  1. Make own Subliminals.
Lets be honest. It isnt a myth that the modetn Sub community has an atrocious taste of music. I don't wanna listen to k pop ahit, I don't want to listen to spiritual meditation music or bird sounds. I want quality music that I vibe with.
And affirmations? Its easy af. Do it on a style u feel comfortable with. like " I am smarter than every genius combined" Experiment. Looks whats the best for you. Maybe "You" sentences work awesome. Experiment what works the best for you. You can also use your own language
I hope you feel less foolish and more clarified. Be grateful that you read 4 years of knowledge right now. 2 More
6. You think Subliminals are placebo
No. They. Are. Real. Subliminals is not about beliefs. All they do is they hack into subconscious and change / convince it. Subconscious does not know what is fake or real. To try it out, get lucid and use a toilet ;).
If they are placebo, why did Mindpower worked sadly very good on its victims. Placebos are expected. But hidden Affirmations? You did not expect it, so it cant be placebo. It also cant be nocebo because YOU DID NOT expect it. Unlike you do with side effects on medications
Remember to drink water my homie
  1. Power of Reason.
If you listen Subliminals. For others(changing yourself) . Fuck off. You are going the wrong path. Its hard.
If you listen Subliminals. Out of self hatred. Fuck off. You are beautiful the way you are. Social Media is a lie.
If you listen Subliminal in the matter of principle and test it out rather its fake or not, fuck off. You dont get the quality results. Your vibes are neutral. It all sucks.
If you listen Subliminals out of rationality or negative emotions. It just won't work on long term. Emotional positive reasons sustain the best.
Its like working out for the sake of getting stronger and healthier is a short term reason. vs Working out for a cosplay is way more effective due to its emotional capacity. We are emotional beings.
But the emotions should be as fun as possible.
*Note down what you really want. The End? *
Hope you fucking learned something
Bonus: (congrats if you got there. Thank you so fucking much) Detach. If you check for results. Its like Staring at the clock during a boring lesson. Your conscious is slow and careful but the subconscious is fast as fuck and not careful at all.
If you stare consciously at the clock or loading bar. Its slow as fuck. Meanwhile if u stare consciously at the Netflix screen. The time ticks fast af. 2 episodes later, oh shit its 2 am.
Distract yourself. Use Audiomack (Subs on background) and play games, scroll through reddit.
The End

Drawing the line.

For many of you, this game is still inviting and fun. For others this game is dead. For me, it's wasted potential. I have played for several years now. 960 days based on in-game tracking. For a while now I have tried to speak with the devs about issues with the game and its further development. I have piles of emails to support talking about one thing or another mainly to benefit the game and its players. With each new attempt, I get more and more sidelined by the support team. Their inadequacies to be able to do their part for the community is a great hindrance to the development of the game. Aside from just ranting these jesters come with evidence. A while ago I made a post here on Reddit asking for suggestions and bugs you as players have found.
https://www.reddit.com/hyperheroes/comments/i5n6c5/suggestion_for_fixes_to_the_game/
That did gain some attraction with the devs giving me a whole 2k diamonds. Out of all the fixes listed in there, only one notable thing was changed/fixed.
Missing Relics https://i.imgur.com/3CjRKWd.pngAll relics should be available here, not just some. Don’t make them an event only. Doing so increases the time needed to max unnecessarily.
Not all relics were placed in there. You still can't get a few of them.
In December I reported a guild for botting showing evidence to the support staff to which I was asked.

"Hi.
Could you please tell us what software they were using?"

I reported this guild 4 times with video evidence and these are the rest of the replies I got from them.

" Hi.
Do you mean that they are cheating?"

" Hi.
Could you please tell us what software they were using?"

" Hi.
We will check the cheaters' data. And many players will report the cheaters to us. We will receive it and check it. If you meet the cheater, please send the screenshot or video to us. Thanks a lot~"

" Hi.
Could you please provide us with your Guild ID?
Thanks a lot~"

" Hi,
Thanks for your information.
We will check it~"

Little to nothing has probably been done to said guild or guild members. https://i.imgur.com/yeedg88.png little to no views other than myself and my guildmates. Back in
March was the last time the support paid attention to bug reports I tasked my guild to focus on reporting issues found within the new event "War of Heroes"
I have tried several times to get them to stop posting "hotfixes" on their Facebook as nothing was being added to the game other than changes in the events. https://i.imgur.com/o69OGGH.png

Me- " Well, it's been 1 week was wondering if there are any results of bugs and suggestions? "

"Hi.
You could stay tuned to our Facebook announcements.
If there will be any news, we will release a relevant announcement.
Thanks for your support.
Have a nice day~"

Me-"
Yup, I watch the Facebook post all the time. But I have and issues with them. You say hotfix and updates but all that is ever listed is what events you're going to add and the times for downtime.“usual server upkeep” is the only thing that is mentioned that doesn’t align with “events” and that can just be a simple reboot of the server.
Do you plan on releasing more in-depth details about the updates? A lot of gamers really like having detailed adjustments to the game laid out for us.
For example, even if it's just changing the scaling on a certain hero by .1 we will still read over it.
“ 📷Patch Notice
There will be a hotfix patch for events and usual server upkeep tomorrow. To thank you for your support, we will send 200 diamonds to everyone's in-game mailbox after the hotfix. Here are a few highlights of this update:
Events
📷Tribal Bingo
⏰ Timetable (Server Time): 05:00 Aug 14 - 05:00 Aug 21
📷Hyper Mine
⏰ Timetable (Server Time): 05:00 Aug 17 - 05:00 Aug 21
It’ll be a small download pack, but you might still wanna make sure you connect to WiFi during the update:
⏰ SEA Servers: 14:00 Aug 13 (SGT)
⏰ EU Servers: 06:00 Aug 13 (GMT)
⏰ NA Servers: 23:00 Aug 12 (PST)
Feel free to send us a message in Help Center if you’re experiencing an issue! Thank you guys 📷“ "

"Hi.
We don't have any news about it as well.
You could pay attention to our announcements.
If there will be any news, there will be a relevant announcement on Facebook for the first time.
Thanks for your support."

Me- " Ok, so I did as you suggested followed along with in-game announcements and Facebook. Am I wondering where you think any of the information I’m asking for is being posted? I have sent you screenshots of the Facebook page.
https://i.imgur.com/kMFu85Z.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/Wqfzewd.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/5NOHoaf.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/aMbJ7tA.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/8kqGXVl.png
These so-called “hotfixes” are nothing more than letting us know what events you are doing this week. Another thing on the list of things I have provided for you titled“ Missing Relics https://i.imgur.com/3CjRKWd.png All relics should be available here, not just some. Don’t make them an event only. Doing so increases the time needed to max unnecessarily.”
on https://docs.google.com/document/d/15X2-9JaJpsCZhB7r8P3Esr59UY1BWoOOBQsXNdn-Sus/edit?usp=sharingwas addressed but there was no mention of it. There are still relics missing from the list Saint Claymore for example still has not relic in the store.
But I’m sure it's on the “hotfixes” listed on the website.
I want to know where we are at on the bug fixes and suggestions I have given you more them ample time to address a lot of the issues that the community has provided you. "

" Hi.
We will submit your idea that "releasing more in-depth details about the updates" to our technical staff.
Thanks for your support. "

These are the only time they changed the formatting of it.
https://i.imgur.com/oR1TwEW.png
https://i.imgur.com/ZPei4a8.png
In such little time, they went right back to posting the old format.
https://i.imgur.com/HLB3EIM.png
And they still had no information about adding the missing relics back into the market.

I highly suggest the devs of this game either step up to the wants and needs of your players or shut the game down.

36yo Accountant -NW UK

36 year old female Accountant, living in NW England with her husband H and dog.
All amounts are in GBP or AUD where applicable.
Section One: Assets and Debt
Debt- We have no debt thankfully.
Pension- I lived in Australia for 7 years on a very good salary, and I have $110k AUD in Superannuation (pension plan). I returned in 2016 and I have about £12k in pensions between my jobs since then.
Savings - £50k This is for our future house purchase. We were buying a bigger house when Covid hit and had to pull out, so I’m saving best as I can until the market settles.
Equity - We bought our house outright for £82k, and spent about £12k renovating it. We estimate it to be worth £100-110k now.
Section Two: Income
I am an accountant and I earn £2916 a month, however I pay £495 a month into my companies sharesave scheme as it was too good a deal to turn down.
H runs a small shop locally and we haven’t got round to completely pooling finances yet. As such I pay for most of the housing costs, and our weekly grocery shop. I also cover holidays, gigs, weekends away etc (when we could go) He then tends to cover more day to day fun stuff like eating and drinking out, and he also covers the horses. However I do tend to chip in too if we are doing a lot, as I do earn more.
Section Three: Expenses
Monthly Expenses:
Rent/Mortgage - £0. We own our house outright. The house we bought is a tiny two up two down terrace that doesn’t have an upstairs toilet. We bought it for £82k, and needed a lot of work. I am very ready to upgrade, but then Covid hit. Council tax - £119 - I pay Utilities (Water, electricity, gas) - £59- I pay TV Licence - £13 - I pay Wifi and TV- £35 - H pays Student loans - £0 - I had to pay them off when I moved to Australia in 2010 with my ex. That was for my bachelors degree in Accounting, my professional qualification my first employer paid for. Car payment - £0 - my employer has provided me with an electric car so I currently have no BIK Mobile phone - £10- I bought my phone outright. Netflix: £9.99- H pays Health, dental & vision - £0 My work covers medical which is included in the tax I pay Savings - whatever is left at the end of the month Gym - £75 Amazon prime - £7.99 Les Mills on Demand - £11.99 Simply cook- £7.99 Horse box tax - £20 - H pays Charitable Contributions - Nothing scheduled, however donate when things come up, and sponsor friends for events regularly.
Annual Expenses
D Car insurance - £180 (H pays) House insurance - £90 (H pays) Horse box insurance - £300 (H pays)
Christmas Day
5am- It’s Christmas! I wake up at 5am needing a wee, and decide to turn off my 7am alarm. I then wake up again at 8.45am! Eeek. I go downstairs and return with a cuppa for H and the dogs stocking (yes we are those people). He gets 10 tennis balls, 3 toys, 2 bones and a nice fleece blanket off us and his dog sitter so he is delighted.
9am - We make coffees and open our presents. We have a massive haul and I feel so incredibly spoilt. My highlight was a brand new fancy bridle for the pony I acquired in the summer from H, and I bought him a canvas print from a gallery we often walk past when we visit the coast.
10am - H goes outside to take the dog to the farm to do the horses, and it’s frozen solid. He finally leaves after a few false starts, and I crack on with the cooking. I make cauliflower cheese first, then assemble pigs in blankets, make Yorkshire pudding batter and then peel lots of potatoes, carrots and parsnips.
12pm - H and the dog return just as the chickens are about to go in and I shower, get dressed and pour a glass of champers. I find Turkey dry, and too big for 6 so I always roast 2 chickens. We are having H’s family round for lunch (the 4 live together). Unfortunately we had to cancel seeing mine as it was planned for Boxing Day!
2pm - Our guests turn up, H carves the chickens and I quickly knock together some gravy and boil some broccoli. We sit down and it’s all really good, we have a nice chat, and they head off, they really are easy guests.
4pm - H drives us down to give the nags their Christmas dinner of haylage and a few carrots. I check on a horse that belongs to a friend who had colic the other night and he seems fine, so we head home, it’s freezing!!! A Christmas evening of watching Sherlock, picking at roast chicken and slobbing out. Last dog wee and I’m in bed just after 10.
£0
Day 2 - Boxing Day
9am - Good morning from tier 3! Typical as I take time off to spend with H whose shop is closed for the period everything else closes too. We get up but can’t face breakfast so it’s coffees and a muesli bar then we head down the farm. We arrive to the incredibly sad news that the horse was found colicking again on a later check up (we all staggered our nightly feeding). The vet came out in the night and tried treating it 3 times but then had to call it a day. We are all so incredibly sad as he was a lovely kind boy, and I hide in my stable hugging my pony whilst he is collected.
12pm - I decide against riding but H helps me fit my bridle to the pony, and we head home to drop the dog off and heat up a bit of leftover cauliflower cheese. I bought H a months membership to the gym I go to whilst he is off, and I am so glad I did as it’s one of the only things that’s partially open now. We grab our togs and have a swim, followed by a very long soak in the jacuzzi. On our way out MIL rings to say that they have done the horses, so we head straight home.
4pm - I put on the fake oodie I got for Christmas, and we open a bottle of Lanson. We eat our body weight in nuts whilst watching the Hunger games.
6pm - A quick sandwich, and we follow it up with Catching Fire. Such good films. Whilst watching I browse Facebook and see that my favourite yoga instructors from the gym are back offering zoom classes as group classes have been cancelled in tier 3. I got into yoga in lockdown 1 as the gym offered it outside and I found that I didn’t hate it after all. I know the self employed gym instructors are really struggling right now, so I donate £20 to a charity class going ahead, as well as signing up to every class I can currently make. £24.5
Ridiculous squabble about the tv volume of all things, followed by bed.
Total - £44.5
Day 3- 27th December
8am - Wake up and scroll my phone for a bit whilst waiting for H to wake up, he brings coffee to bed and we let the dog up for a cuddle. We don’t bother with breakfast so head down to sort the horses. We feed, muck out and both ride, I have a lovely ride on my pony, whilst H rides his big event horse. Once done we head home before we freeze to death.
12.30pm - I quickly poach some eggs on toast for all of us, H and I eat them and I save the dogs for his tea! Afterwards we head back to the gym for a 30 min swim and a soak in the outdoor jacuzzi. On the way home I stop at Lidl just for some milk, cheese and crisps. £3.22. We’re off pony duty again tonight so straight home in the warm for us.
4pm - Once home I do 30 mins of yoga; and H watches the end of a film, then it’s pj’s, champagne and nuts/crisps whilst watching the first part of the Mockingjay film. During this my phone pops up with a reminder and it turns out that one of the yoga classes I signed up to is tonight. Funny thing is that H told me it was, but I was adamant it was tomorrow. Apparently it is indeed Sunday today. I’ve had half a bottle of champagne and I’m full of crisps; so I message the instructor to see if there is going to be a link to access. She saves my bacon and laughs at me a lot.
8pm - We don’t bother with a proper dinner again, just get out a cheeseboard we were bought from a friend whilst watching the last of the 4 films. I go on Moonpig and order our friend S a mug with photos of her horse to give her in a week or so when she is less raw. This cost £9.99 but I have an old PayPal balance. I’m now totally over sitting on the sofa, so the dog gets taken out, and we’re in bed pre 10pm.
£3.22
Day 4- 28th December
8am - I wake up needing a wee again and it’s snowed! I pinch H’s dressing gown and his crocs and take the dog out for a quick play as he’s barely seen snow before. He’s a bit unsure then jumps around like a loon. When I can’t feel my feet anymore I come in and turn my laptop on to check my emails. It’s a bank holiday today but I have stuck to my resolve of leaving it off so far (I’ve done a lot of hours lately). There is only one email to sort so I sort it, everyone else is clearly managing to take a break too.
9am - I take H a cup of tea and tell him we best go, snow and horses unfortunately do not mix well. We quickly make some toast, knock the snow off the car, drive down very slowly and arrive to the news that the weight of the snow has pulled down an old canopy roof over where the horses are shod, so we secure the area best as we can with barriers and cones, and I feed and muck out whilst H shovels snow in case it freezes again. A quick chat with his parents who have arrived and eat a few too many Haribo that someone has bought down, but it’s too cold for hanging around outside today!
2pm - We get home and make a sandwich each, and just have an hour to warm up, then we’re back down whilst it’s still light with a boot full of rock salt. Even the dog looks aghast at going out again so soon but needs must. H spreads this whilst I feed and water.
4pm - We decide as its still early to head back to the pool AGAIN. It’s really busy inside so even H who is a terrible wuss with a cold pool heads outside. Well it’s absolutely beautiful, I only get 25 mins out of him before he wants the jacuzzi but it’s stunning in the dark in a heated outdoor pool. We poach in the jacuzzi until I feel slightly lightheaded then shower, change at home.
6pm - Home James. I feel vegetable deprived, and also deprived of my favourite hobby - cooking. I have a simply cook pack of Sicilian roast chicken spices so I roast chicken breasts, mash potatoes and roast some leftover carrots and parsnips to have with sweetcorn and the left over Christmas stuffing (for H). We stick on a Sherlock and eat away! It’s lovely. I made enough for leftovers for lunch but H ate them! We watch tv for a bit longer but are really tired so a last quick dog walk and then to bed.
Total - £0
Day 5- 29th December
8am - So i’m not actually on leave today technically, but I’ve agreed I’ll log the hours worked and sort it out later. Check my e-mails but only a few bits to sort so do it right away. Scrambled eggs on toast and coffees and it’s off we go. It luckily hasn’t snowed further, but it’s very cold so very icy and slippy. All the family are down helping this morning so not loads to do. H rides his horse but the rest of us try to stay warm.
12pm - It’s time to do the supermarket shop, thankfully everything is in stock. I buy far too much stuff including tulips, toilet roll, beer for H, loads of chicken and as there are discounts on washing powder and cleaning products those too. 2 massive bags come to £64.73.
3pm - Once home and unloaded I do an hours work, then download the yoga class I got the link for the other day. When done I heat up some quiche. I did the yoga on our bedroom and the floor is really grotty so I grab H and we dust, hoover, change the bedding and put laundry away, looks so much better afterwards. H fancies a nap and I read my book.
6pm - We scrap the pool today, and I check my work emails again then potter about chopping veg for dinner. I’m making a SimplyCook recipe of linguine with chicken and veg. It tastes far more decadent than it is, as the sauce has reduced fat creme fraiche but tastes like cream!
8pm - We eat and watch Sherlock. I search on line for new lululemon leggings. I love them, and I can do everything in them, but I struggle with the nulux fabric as they slide down, so I have had rubbish luck lately (hence my PayPal balance from reselling). I ask a couple of questions and make a couple of offers on eBay, but I spot what I think could be the perfect pair on the lulu sale, so I pop in an order £64.99. I also book tickets for a local winter light walk that was recommended by a friend, £49 (this seems very expensive, but maybe the only thing we get to do in January. To bed we go!
Total - £178.73 (ouch)
Day 6 - 30th December
8am - Wake up naturally again. Going to struggle to bring this forward by 90 minutes before too long. Dog wee and check e-mails, still quiet. I got a counter offer off a pair of leggings but decide to hold off as I bought a pair yesterday. It’s my charity yoga class this morning so I set up in the bedroom, and H heads down for breakfast with the dog.
10.30am - Was a lovely class and for a great homeless charity. The mug I ordered for S has arrived and it’s rubbish, all the adjustments I made on the photos had reset, and I’m really disappointed as it looks so random, half the horses head gone and people in it sweeping the yard. I show H who says it’s funnier that way, and I should give it to her anyway! I make a coffee in my to go mug and grab a muesli bar and off we go. It’s snowed again and the yard is frozen solid. It’s the glamorous side of horse ownership when the taps freeze and you have to shovel horse poo all over the concrete to stop people slipping everywhere. Wouldn’t have it any other way but it’s rather cold! I find S and give her the mug, and she cries and laughs so I think the comedy mug worked. Not really safe to get the horses out on the ice so neither of us ride, and we come home for a warm up.
12.30 - I heat up a bit of the leftover chicken and veg from last night and H has cheese. We watch a Sherlock and are intending on doing very little. However, up pops Matt Hancock and we’re in tier 4 from midnight. That means no gym. And whilst it isn’t really swimming outside kinda weather, we are stupid so do it anyway. Half an hour swim then to the jacuzzi.
6pm - Get home and potter about doing jobs. End up accepting the offer on those Lulu leggings as it looks like I’m going to be living in them. £50. Also book onto another special yoga class, £7.50 and see that a Les Mills presenter is doing combat classes on zoom so book onto 3 of those next week £11. I do need to stop doing this now and use my Les Mills app but I do like the classes and know the instructors appreciate the income.
8pm - I heat up some chilli from the freezer, and we rent the new Roald Dahl Witches film on Prime. £4.99. We really enjoy it (nothing beats the original though). I text my best friend and brother who use my Prime, to see if they want to watch it. Straight to bed, read for a bit and then sleep.
Total - A rather unnecessary £73.50 but hopefully an enjoyable £73.50!
Day 7- 31st December
8am - Hello from Tier 4 (FML). I had a terrible nights sleep last night, just felt really flat. Emails checked. Dog taken out (he has access to our yard 24/7 but does he choose to wee there?! Of course not.) Toast and marmite for me (jam for H) and coffees from the nespresso machine. To the horses we go, bit easier today, we have a working tap. On the way past we see a car gone into someone’s front garden in the village. What a rubbish day they all must have had.
1.30pm - Home and a microwave pizza for me, and a sandwich for H. I do a little bit of work as what I have been waiting for has come through, and then just really feel the need to start cleaning. The dog moults a lot and us being in and out from the farm doesn’t lead to clean floors.
3.30pm - I mop us out of the house as we are on pony duty tonight. We’re done in record time and then it’s back home in the warm. We open a bottle of Laurent Perrier that work got me! Very nice indeed. Watch some more Sherlock.
7pm - We order Pizza Hut £30, and play cards. Make some resolutions including dry January, and fitness and weight for me. Make it just until midnight, then straight to bed and sleep. Happy new year!!
Total - £30
Definitely spent a lot this week considering we couldn’t really go anywhere. Still hopefully I have a couple of nice pairs of lululemon leggings on the way, and that the weather is kind enough for the light show. We’ll do nothing but work and the horses through January so should even it off a bit!

I’m 27, married with a combined income of ~$95,000, live in Wisconsin and work in software customer support.

Section One: Assets and Debt
Retirement Balance: $35,000 in a SEP IRA through my employer. They match 2% if I contribute at least 4%. I currently contribute 8%.
$21,000 in my husband’s Roth IRA. He’s a PhD student and the university doesn’t let him contribute to a retirement account pre-tax, so we’ve been maxing a Roth for him each of the last few years. We haven’t yet put in the full amount for this year but have it set aside in our savings.
Savings account balance: About $42,000 spread across a couple of accounts.
Checking account balance: Around $4000.
Investments: About $15,000 in CDs which will be part of a down payment at some point.
About $20,000 in a mutual fund; my parents threw I think $1000 into this when I was very young and have just let it sit and grow since then. This will also probably go towards a down payment.
HSA: $1200. I was able to contribute to an HSA when I was on health insurance through my employer; I’m now on my husband’s health insurance because he has a great and inexpensive plan through the university, but I can’t contribute to this account anymore.
Credit card debt (and how you accumulated it): None, we pay off our credit cards in full each month.
Student loan debt (for what degree): None for me; I received a merit-based scholarship that covered one year of undergrad and my parents graciously covered the rest along with living expenses. My husband’s parents paid for his undergrad degree. Tuition is waived for his PhD program, so no debt from that.
Section Two: Income
Income Progression: I’ve worked at the same company since I graduated college (over 6 years now). I started in an entry-level role in 2014 with a $29,000 salary. After about a year, I got promoted to the role I’m in now and also received a raise to $36,000. In 2018, I asked for a raise and got bumped up to $43,000. I’ve also received a small cost of living raise every year, which brings me to where I am now at about $45,000. (All of these numbers are salary only, not including bonuses; I did receive significant bonuses every year, and the amounts have increased year-over-year--I just don’t remember how much I received each year.)
Main Job:
Me: Last year I made $62,000 pre-tax. As mentioned, my salary is about $45,000, and I expect to get in the neighborhood of $17k in bonuses this year, possibly more. I take home $2725/month after taxes and 8% retirement contribution.
Husband: He makes $29,000 pre-tax as a PhD student. He takes home $2081 per month after taxes and both of our health insurance (I don’t remember what the monthly premium is).
Side Gig:
I’ve picked up a side job this year helping students prepare their personal statements/essays for their college applications, and I expect to make between $4000-$5000 from that total for the year. The amount I make per month varies, and I have to estimate my own taxes, so I set aside money for that from each weekly paycheck.
Section Three: Expenses
Rent: $1115 (includes $25/month fee for having a cat). We have a 2 bed/1 bath apartment in the suburbs of a MCOL city, and heat and water are included in our rent.
Renter’s insurance: $21.25
Investment contribution: $500/month towards my husband’s Roth IRA
Donations: $478/month in recurring donations. About half of that goes to our church and the rest is split among a variety of other charities/organizations. We also usually set aside another $50-$75/month for anything extra that comes up that we want to give to; lately this has included things like Fair Fight and the runoffs in Georgia, our local tenant resource center, and our local food pantry.
Electric: Anywhere from $40-$100 depending on the time of year; right now it’s about $50.
Wifi: $70
Cellphones: $175 (includes service, leases for both our phones, and insurance for both phones)
Subscriptions: Spotify Premium Duo for $13.70, Disney Plus for $7, we use my husband’s parents’ Netflix, Hulu is free with our phone plan, and we’re on my parents’ Amazon Prime account.
Pet expenses: We don’t budget a set amount monthly specifically for our cat, but her prescription food costs about $35 every six weeks, and we also always keep a few hundred dollars earmarked for occasional vet expenses.
Car insurance: $78.16/month (total for 2 cars)
Car registration: $226/year so we budget $19/month (total for 2 cars)
School fees: This varies and is paid on a semester basis, but we budget about $100/month for fees for my husband’s grad program. He doesn’t have to pay tuition but he does have to pay these fees (I’ll take it).
Costco membership: $60/year so essentially $5/month
Gas: $75, but this is hard to estimate
Groceries: We’re budgeting about $350 right now--a little more than in the before times but our entertainment budget is a little less to compensate.
Entertainment: $200 (see above)--in normal times this would include going out to eat, going to concerts or sporting events, etc. Now it’s pretty much just takeout.
Allowance/personal spending money: $100 each for my husband and me, which rolls over to the next month if we don’t use all of it.
This is getting long but we also budget on a monthly basis for personal care, household items, and alcohol, and for many other things on a medium-to-long-term basis in sinking funds. We use a zero-based budget, so every dollar we bring in gets allocated somewhere.
Section 4: Money Attitudes
Was there an expectation for you to attend higher education? Did you participate in any form of higher education? If so, how did you pay for it?: Yes, both of my parents have master’s degrees, and I was a very good student growing up, so it was always a given that I would pursue higher education. I have a BA and double-majored in communications and writing. I’ve covered above in the student debt section how my degree was paid for; I’m very blessed to have had my parents provide for me in this way, and I realize it has given me a huge leg up as far as savings and financial stability goes.
Growing up, what kind of conversations did you have around money? Did your parents educate you on finances?: We didn’t have a ton of conversations around money, but my parents are (as far as I can tell) very responsible with money and live well within their means, so I think I’ve learned from their example more so than from explicit instruction. We lived pretty frugally growing up, and it’s clear to me now that my parents could have had a newebigger house, nicer car, better vacations, etc, but chose not to so that they could follow through on their commitment to paying for a degree, a car, and a wedding for each of their children (which, again, has given me an enormous financial advantage in my adult life). I did have an allowance growing up and was always taught to put at least 10% toward giving, 10% to savings, and then I could do what I wanted with the rest of it, which I think was a great mindset to have from an early age.
What was your first job and why did you get it?: Maybe working the cash snack bar at our neighborhood pool when I was in middle school? I also babysat from a fairly young age. I worked a couple of other random and short-lived part-time jobs during high school and college but didn’t make much money from them and didn’t need them for my living expenses since my parents were fully supporting me.
Did you worry about money growing up?: I never worried about money growing up. If my parents had financial hardships during my childhood, they never let it show.
Do you worry about money now?: I used to worry about money a lot for the first several years of my marriage. I knew we had a good amount of money saved, but we didn’t have that money earmarked for particular things (emergency fund, travel, car maintenance, medical expenses, etc), so whenever a big expense came up, I got incredibly anxious because I didn’t really know where that money was coming from or whether this expense was leaving us vulnerable in another area. Switching to a zero-based budget and having designated savings funds for all major expenses (both recurring and unpredictable) has created an enormous amount of freedom for me with money. I don’t freak out anymore when we go to spend $1500 on plane tickets for a trip (hypothetical right now, of course) because I can see the money we have set aside in our travel fund for that exact purpose, and I know that spending that money isn’t affecting our ability to deal with an emergency because we have a separate emergency fund for that. All that to say, I don’t experience much anxiety about money anymore and I credit our budgeting system for that in a big way.
At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself and do you have a financial safety net?: I would consider myself financially responsible for myself once I got married, which was a few months after graduating from college. If my husband and I were to fall on hard times, both of our families would have the resources and the willingness to help us out to some extent.
Do you or have you ever received passive or inherited income? If yes, please explain.
As mentioned above, my parents opened a mutual fund for me when I was very young with I think $1000 in it, but nothing has been added to that since. I have no idea about future inheritances or anything like that.
Note: the week I documented for this diary occurred in early December--a couple of weeks earlier than the date I’m posting this. Also, masks are a given anytime we leave the apartment.

Day 1: Thursday
7:00am: My alarm goes off; my husband (H) and I alternate snoozing each of our alarms for the next 40 minutes, which is a loud and frequent morning ritual that leads to no additional actual sleep but at least lets us stay in bed longer.
7:40am: I remember that I start work at 8 today instead of 9 (like most days), so I jump out of bed, take a quick shower, and get dressed. H’s brother calls so he is chatting with him on the phone while I get ready.
8:00am: I sign in to work; it looks like it will be another slow day (typical for this time of year), so I need to motivate myself to work ahead on some things. Instead, I check my personal email and read the news.
8:30am: For breakfast, I make a toasted whole wheat English muffin with butter and honey, grab a handful of grapes, and make a Nespresso. I eat at my desk while I semi-work and listen to podcasts (this morning, it’s Brene Brown’s Unlocking Us and the 5-minute NPR News Now). H leaves to go into work for a few hours; there are certain things he can’t do from home, but since the pandemic, everyone in his workplace can only work in-person (masked and distanced) during an assigned shift time in order to reduce the volume of people there, so he splits his workdays between the university and our home office (which we share). Thankfully, there’s never more than a handful of people there at the same time as him and his colleagues are conscientious about following COVID protocols, so we feel pretty comfortable with him going in.
11:15am: Hungry again; I snack on Moon Cheese, which are these crunchy cheese bites that we got from Costco a month or so ago. I don’t really like them. I take a break from my computer to make the bed and tidy up our bedroom a little.
12:00pm: Lunch break--I spend the first half hour putting on makeup since I have some video calls this afternoon and evening. Pre-COVID, I considered makeup a hobby and would wear it even if I didn’t have anywhere to go or anyone to see, but a lot of the joy has been sucked out of it for me. Now, I usually just wear the bare minimum to look “presentable” on Zoom. I’m trying to have more fun with it again, though, so today I use a multichrome eyeshadow from indie brand Clionadh Cosmetics that I haven’t touched in months. Once I’m done, I have a quick lunch of a sandwich and chips before my meeting.
1:00pm: I log onto my weekly team meeting for work; H gets home partway through and brings me my Panera coffee order that he picked up on the way home. We both have a free trial of Panera’s coffee subscription right now and are taking full advantage!
4:00pm: Done with work! H has an important meeting now, so I get out of the office to give him some privacy. I start prepping chicken enchiladas for dinner.
5:30pm: The meeting went great! We eat the enchiladas and end up with a ton of leftovers. I put the food away and knock out a few dishes.
6:00pm: We get on Zoom for our weekly church small group meeting. There was a time when we felt comfortable meeting outdoors and distanced, but at this point, we’re on Zoom for the foreseeable future. Not to mention it’s cold here now.
7:30pm: Small group is done! I get an automated email from my side job letting me know that a second draft of an essay I previously worked on is available for me to edit, so I grab my computer and work on that for a little while.
8:30pm: H runs to the store for two bottles of Liquid Plumr for our shower drain (the glamour!) and red wine ($28.45). Fun fact about Wisconsin: you can’t buy alcohol from a store (anywhere that’s not a restaurant/bar) after 9pm, so he gets the wine purchase in just in time. I finish the dishes while he’s gone.
9:00pm: We put one of those 4K fireplace YouTube videos on the TV, turn on the Christmas lights, and each have a glass of wine while chatting and looking through old photos on H’s phone. H also makes some pizza rolls as a snack and I eat a couple.
11:30pm: I get ready for bed and after watching TikToks together in bed for a little while, we go to sleep.
Total: $28.45
Day 2: Friday
8:00am: Snooze my alarm for an hour before finally getting up. I am really moving slow in the mornings these days. H left to go into work around 6:30, so I have the apartment to myself for a while. I tidy up a few things around the house and spend a little while reading on the couch; the cat joins me.
9:00am: I make a Nespresso and sign on to work. I work on some tasks and send emails while listening to NPR News Now and NY Times The Daily podcasts.
10:00am: For breakfast, I have an egg over easy on toast and some grapes, again eating while I work. I spend some time reading COVID news and looking at our county’s data dashboard; our county, and Wisconsin overall, have actually been consistently trending down lately as far as cases go, which is surprising. Our plans for Christmas are still up in the air; we have been hoping and planning to visit our immediate families since we haven’t seen them in a year, but I’m still worried about the risk involved even if we are as careful as possible (quarantining beforehand, getting tested, driving instead of flying, etc). We’re putting off making a decision as long as we can.
11:30am: Our small group is “adopting” (buying Christmas gifts for) a family from a local school our church partners with, and I’ve been tasked with helping organize this, so I create a sign-up list in a Google spreadsheet to share with our group so we can keep track of what items have been purchased. I also start filling out my self-evaluation for my semi-annual review at work, which is next week. There’s twice as many questions on this evaluation compared to ones from past years (why??), so good thing I’m getting a head start.
12:15pm: I snack on Moon Cheese to tide me over until my late lunch today, but I’m still hungry afterward and craving something sweet, so I have a handful of cookies and cream popcorn that I bought a couple weeks ago to support a friend’s kid’s fundraiser (twist my arm, right).
1:00pm: Break time--I do a 20 minute full body HIIT workout from a MadFit YouTube video that really kicks my ass (my upper body and core strength is pretty dismal...I’m working on it). I shower, change, and for lunch I have leftover pesto and tomato pasta and half of an apple. We stan Honeycrisp in this household.
2:00pm: Back to work. H gets home and brings in a few packages from the mail area downstairs (one of them is a Christmas gift for him with very obviously branded packaging...oops). The other is a couple of books I ordered from Bookshop when they were having their Black Friday weekend free shipping promotion: Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language by Gretchen McCulloch, which is about how the internet is changing the English language, and Dune by Frank Herbert, which I can’t believe I’ve never read but definitely want to before the movie comes out next year!
3:30pm: I knock out some tasks for work and then take a break to carry our overflowing laundry basket downstairs to the basement laundry room and start two loads. I pay using our prepaid card that we reloaded a few weeks ago, so there’s no actual cost today. As a side note, I will greatly prioritize in-unit laundry wherever we live next. I really hate lugging a heavy laundry basket up and down multiple flights of stairs (and it’s always heavy because we put it off because we hate doing it so much. Vicious cycle.)
4:00pm: Time to switch the laundry over. On my way back upstairs I check our mailbox and see that we got a letter from our bank letting us know that an instance of fraud we had reported a few months ago had been verified and the temporary credit they had applied to our account is now permanent. So that’s a relief! Thankfully there was not much money in the account to begin with (it’s one that we use for travel because there are no foreign transaction fees and they refund us any ATM fees), but this is the second time this year we’ve had an issue with fraud (different accounts and banks each time).
5:00pm: Done with work; H brings up the laundry and we fold it together. H isn’t hungry yet but I am, so for dinner, I heat up some leftover ham and potato soup (made with leftover ham from Thanksgiving...it’s leftovers all the way down!) and make a boring salad--spring mix with diced tomato and Caesar dressing.
6:00pm: We head to Costco together, stopping first to get gas for H’s car ($22.29). We only have a few things on our Costco list but end up coming home with ginger beer, sparkling water, toilet paper, paper towels, two bottles of wine, prosciutto, pains au chocolat, a Ghirardelli chocolate assortment, cinnamon cranberry goat cheese, tikka masala sauce, sundried tomatoes, and olive oil ($127.98). Several impulse buys in there for sure, but we allow ourselves some of those since we only go to Costco once a month. I was amazed that they had both TP and paper towels in stock at the same time so we couldn’t pass that up--we were getting low on both anyway.
7:00pm: Back home, we unload the groceries and put everything away. I microwave and eat one of the pains au chocolat--these were a good purchase. I pour a glass of wine, H has a beer, and we repeat the same scene as last night: fire on the TV, Christmas lights on, chatting about life and the future--these are our favorite types of nights together. Since H didn’t eat dinner and I’m still hungry too, we pull together a makeshift charcuterie plate with what we have around the house and it actually turns out pretty well! Salami, prosciutto, the cranberry cinnamon goat cheese we just bought, Boursin cheese, and crackers.
9:30pm: H mentions this game he saw someone playing on Twitch called Late Shift, which is less like a video game and more like a choose-your-own-adventure movie. We decide to download it and try it out ($13.70) and H makes Moscow mules for us to drink while we play. It’s an interesting concept but falls a little flat for us in its execution; a lot of times, you’re given two options and you choose one, but the result you get still ends up being essentially the same as if you chose the other option, so it doesn’t really feel like the choices matter--which I would think is the whole point, right? We get bored of it after a while and decide to stop halfway through and maybe pick it up again another time.
11:30pm: We both get ready for bed, scroll TikTok for a little while, then fall asleep.
Total: $163.97
Day 3: Saturday
8:30am: Both of us wake up around the same time. It’s nice to get to sleep in together; often, H has to go into work on Saturday mornings, but not today! I put on a little makeup, then H makes us coffee and I drink mine while updating our budget spreadsheet with yesterday’s purchases.
10:00am: We join a Zoom call for a standing-invitation Saturday morning virtual brunch with a few friends and friends-of-friends. I warm up a pain au chocolat and slice up the other half of the apple from yesterday and eat as discreetly as possible while we all chat.
11:15am: I say goodbye to everybody and head out to my haircut and color appointment; I haven’t been since June, so it’s definitely needed. My hairdresser and I chat about COVID and the holidays. With tip, my total is $165 (I actually mean to tip a little more but do my mental math wrong--ugh).
1:30pm: I get home from the salon and am surprised to find that the Zoom brunch hangout is still ongoing, so I pop in again to say hi. I’m super hungry, so I heat up leftover enchiladas for me and H for lunch. I feel weird about eating anything on camera really, but I definitely draw the line at eating enchiladas on camera, so I eat in the kitchen while H wraps up the Zoom call. I want something sweet so I grab a couple pieces of chocolate afterwards, too.
2:00pm: H goes in our office to play Minecraft with some friends for the rest of the afternoon. I check to see if there’s work available for my side job, but there’s nothing. It’s been the slowest week for essay volume that I can remember since I started this job, which means I definitely won’t get a paycheck for this week (I have to earn at least $100 to get paid by the end of the week; if I don’t hit $100, the amount rolls over to the next week). Having a side job like this that I can pick up and work on almost anytime is a double-edged sword in that it’s great to have that flexibility, but I also find myself feeling guilty if I have time to work and I choose to do something fun or relaxing with my free time instead.
2:30pm: I’m part of my church’s communications/social media team and I’m scheduled to put up a post today, so I spend a few minutes pulling that together on Instagram. Then I decide to check for essays one more time and I find there’s one available, so I grab it and work on that for a while. It’s a bit of a tricky one and takes me about twice as long as it should, so I finish feeling kind of frustrated.
4:00pm: I take care of a few things around the house, including unloading/reloading the dishwasher, cleaning the litterbox, and wrapping a couple of Christmas gifts. I have to put the cat in time-out because she keeps wanting to walk on the wrapping paper. I listen to an episode of the Around the NFL podcast while I work.
5:30pm: I make grilled cheese and tomato soup for dinner for me and H, and we eat together. I have some chips as well and some more chocolate. Making great choices.
6:00pm: H cleans up from dinner and does the dishes while I start reading Dune. I’ve been really wanting a fantasy novel I can lose myself in like I did as a kid, and I hope this will provide that for me. However, I definitely don’t have the attention span for reading that I did when I was younger, so I end up putting the book away to scroll on my phone for a while.
8:00pm: H and I get on a Google Meet call with some friends to play Jackbox games. We play several from the newest party pack; they’re super fun and it goes really smoothly over the video call (hasn’t always been the case when we’ve tried this in the past).
10:30pm: We say goodnight to our friends and wrap up the call. H goes back to Minecraft for a little while, and I catch myself scrolling mindlessly through my phone again and decide to just put it away for the night. I often find myself getting frustrated and annoyed lately by how much I’m on my phone for no good reason, so I’ve been trying to put it completely away for a while when I feel that way. I put my phone on the charger, wash my face, and put on a sheet mask.
11:45pm: I don’t remember how we spend the rest of the evening, but we still end up staying up pretty late (for us). Oddly, I don’t feel tired at all, but once in bed I fall asleep immediately.
Total: $165
Day 4: Sunday
8:30am: We’re both awake; I must have slept really well because I feel more rested than I have in a while. H gets in the shower and I grab my phone to review my fantasy football lineup before the games this afternoon. My team got off to a strong start but has been on a losing streak the second half of the season; I’m no longer in the running for a playoff appearance, but it’s still fun week to week.
9:00am: H has to quickly stop by work so he leaves for a little while. I make coffee in the Chemex and drink it while reading Reddit and looking at emails. I also redeem our credit card cashback for the past month and update our budget spreadsheet (total from two cards is $87.96).
9:45: H is on his way home from work and calls to see if we want to get food along with our Panera coffee orders. That sounds good to me, so I place my order and get a breakfast sandwich: bacon, egg, and cheese on brioche, and hazelnut coffee with half and half. Since the coffee is free, my total with tip comes to $6.50. H’s is $5.26.
10:00am: I turn on the YouTube livestream of our church’s Sunday service; H gets home shortly after it starts with our Panera coffee and breakfast. My order is slightly wrong--ciabatta bread rather than brioche--which isn’t a huge deal at all but contributes to the ongoing experience that whenever we order takeout food, my order is almost always wrong and H’s never is. It’s kind of a running joke at this point because it’s happened so many times since COVID. We eat while watching the church livestream.
11:30am: After church, we turn on the pregame coverage for whatever NFL game is available in our area (it’s Lions-Bears), and I purchase a Christmas gift I’ve been considering for a while for a friend: a set of specialty cocktail bitters from Bittercube, which is based in WI. It comes out to $40.89 with shipping. I pick up an essay to edit and work on that for a little while with the game on in the background, occasionally checking my fantasy score (as expected, it’s not looking great).
1:30pm: For lunch, I make a salad with spring mix, prosciutto, dates, walnuts, goat cheese, and homemade cider date dressing. We switch to watching the Jaguars-Vikings game since H and I both have players in this game on our fantasy teams. I also grab another short essay to edit; I’m glad I’ve been able to pick up at least a few over the weekend.
3:00pm: I spend a while working on a cross-stitch project while watching the Packers-Eagles game. I grew up in a home where sports were always on TV on weekends/evenings, so there’s something comforting and familiar to me about having football on in the background even if I’m not always paying attention. Once I get bored of cross-stitching, I snack on some of the cookies and cream popcorn and watch the game while wasting time on my laptop. I read that Rudy Giuliani has COVID and can’t help but relish the schadenfreude a little.
5:00pm: I get an email from Target that something I had viewed was on sale; it’s the Anova sous vide we had been considering buying for H’s mom for Christmas. With the sale price, two additional 10% off promotions, and the tiny amount of Target Circle earnings on my account, it comes out to $84.01 all told. I purchase it for pickup at our local store; H will get it on his way back from work tomorrow.
6:00pm: Inspired by a TikTok recipe, I decide to pull out my Instant Pot and make creamy garlic parmesan chicken pasta. I have a glass of wine while I cook.
7:00pm: We eat in front of the TV while watching the start of the Sunday Night Football game. The pasta is delicious; I meant to make a veggie side to go with it but forgot. Carbs it is! I also warm up some leftover pumpkin crisp from Thanksgiving for dessert.
7:30pm: H cleans up from dinner, sweeps the kitchen, and takes out the trash. I spend the evening reading Dune and watching the rest of the game. When the game is over, H makes us whiskey sours and we watch TikToks and hang out for a while.
11:45pm: We finally make it to bed. I lay awake for a long time trying to imagine how I would even go about telling my mom we aren’t coming for Christmas if that’s what we decide. There’s no scenario in which that goes well.
Total: $136.66
Day 5: Monday
7:45am: I’m up, I’m up. No shower yet because I plan to work out at lunchtime. H has already made coffee and we hang out for a little while as we drink it.
9:00am: H leaves for work and I sign on to work. I actually have a decent amount to do today. For breakfast, I have some grapes and a warmed-up pain au chocolat.
10:30am: I’m browsing YouTube for something to put on in the background while I work and I see an SNL skit from this past weekend called “The Christmas Conversation” in my recommended feed. It’s exactly what I expect it to be and it both makes me laugh and want to cry--very relevant to my late-night imaginings yesterday.
12:30pm: One of my Christmas presents arrives: the first delivery of a Winc wine subscription. I don’t mind it not being a surprise; I specifically asked for this and I already knew H was getting it for me because he had to ask me to take the quiz about my wine preferences. I won’t open it until Christmas, though.
1:00pm: On my break, I do a 12-minute intense full body HIIT workout (another MadFit one), and the “intense” description in the title is accurate. That’s enough for me for one day, so I just pedal on our stationary bike for a few minutes to cool down before taking a shower. H gets home with our Panera coffees; I got iced coffee this time. I’m ravenously hungry from my workout, to the point of feeling a little faint, so I heat up pasta from last night for lunch, then end up grabbing some chips and a couple pieces of chocolate, too.
2:00pm: I try to buckle down and get some work done in the afternoon. At least what I have to do today is self-paced tasks rather than anything urgent or time-sensitive. I make some more progress on my self-evaluation and give some thought to what I want the next year at my job to look like. I have increasingly had opportunities to work with departments outside of support as my time at this company has gone on, and those opportunities tend to be the most gratifying parts of my job because I’m better able to use my skill set there and do work I enjoy. Ideally, I would eventually transition mostly or completely out of support and into some sort of role within the company where I can do more writing and editing (which is what I do a lot of in these side projects), but I don’t know if that will ever be a possibility.
5:00pm: For dinner after work, it’s leftovers again. I read Dune for a little while followed by sweeping the bathroom floor and vacuuming the rugs.
6:30pm: My mom wanted to catch up today so I give her a call. I have to reiterate to her that we are feeling hesitant about traveling for the holidays, but it’s clear she is not going to go down without a fight on this, and I can hear how upset she is. I try to be clear and firm about my concerns, but she’s my mom, so I also feel like I have to concede to her points wherever I can and not push things too hard. I get off the call feeling physically sick to my stomach.
7:15pm: H and I talk about Christmas and he is adamant that if we do go, my parents need to commit to at least a “soft” quarantine (no nonessential interactions/outings) for 10 days before we arrive because they are being pretty irresponsible in our view about who they see and what they do right now. Knowing what we do now about their own exposure, it’s becoming clear that they are almost certainly a bigger danger to us than we are to them. I text my mom and let her know about those ground rules (while still not committing to anything), and she seems open to that plan and asks some questions about what we are and aren’t comfortable with. I think she will do whatever she needs to for us to come, which we may be able to use to our advantage.
11:15pm: I feel totally drained from my conversation with my mom and my anxiety about the holidays, so I spend the rest of the evening vegging on the couch and watching Monday Night Football. I make a cup of peppermint tea and have a stroopwafel, and we eventually head to bed.
Total: $0
Day 6: Tuesday
5:30am: H had to leave for work really early today, which inevitably woke me up, and I think it threw the cat off too because while I try to go back to sleep, she spends the next couple of hours really leaning into her chaotic energy--tearing around the room at warp speed, jumping on the dresser, scratching the side of the bed and the walls. This used to be a common problem very early in the mornings but hasn’t happened in a while.
8:30am: The cat eventually chills tf out and I get maybe an hour more of sleep. I read news on my phone and respond to a few texts. I am feeling a little calmer today about holiday plans, but now H is texting me about how anxious he is feeling about everything. That’s the secret to marriage--just try not to both be freaking out at the same time. (Kinda joking, but kinda not?)
9:00am: I make a Nespresso and start work. For breakfast, I have an egg over easy on toast and some grapes. I feel so unfocused and unmotivated today, but I do submit my self-evaluation and make progress on some other tasks. I take a break to snuggle with my cat; I haven’t talked about her a lot in this diary but she’s my buddy and basically my shadow. She is super attached to me and her affection makes her wild antics worth it.
1:00pm: Aaaand as soon as I say something nice about her, she throws up on the bed. I clean it up and put the comforter and sheets in the laundry basket. I guess we’re doing laundry again. On my break, I edit a short essay revision and make boxed mac and cheese for lunch. H gets home with our Panera coffees and we split the mac and cheese.
5:00pm: I force myself to be reasonably productive throughout the afternoon. After work, I run out to do a few errands--I pick up a prescription from the Walgreens pharmacy drive-through ($2.68, I pay with my HSA), and I run into Target to get shampoo and conditioner for myself and a few things for H’s stocking ($55 even). Target is surprisingly deserted which is nice, and I’m able to get in and out quickly.
6:00pm: H did the laundry while I was gone, and we fold it together and remake the bed when I get home. I fill H’s stocking with the items I bought, which completes all of my gifts for him for this year.
7:00pm: We’re both tired of leftovers, so H suggests we make another charcuterie plate and have that for dinner. I have a small salad as well, and we eat while we watch...Tuesday Night Football? What a weird season. There’s a slim chance I could still win my fantasy game this week, so I’m somewhat invested in this game. I have a glass of wine.
10:00pm: I do not win my fantasy game. We get in bed at a reasonable hour but spend a while reading; I read a little of Well-Read Black Girl, which is a collection of essays that is my “nightstand” read at the moment, and a little of Dune. Lights out around 11.
Total: $57.68
Day 7: Wednesday
7:45am: Up and at ‘em. I shower, make coffee in the Chemex, blow-dry my hair, and read a little.
9:00am: H leaves for work, and I start work and make myself an English muffin with butter and honey and half of an apple for breakfast. I listen to an episode of The Daily podcast about the first doses of the COVID vaccine being administered in the UK. It’s hard to wrap my mind around the idea that we’ve finally reached this point, even though it’s still going to take a long time for things to feel anything like normal again for most people.
11:30am: I’m scheduled for another church social media post, and I fumble around in Illustrator for a while trying to get the image to look the way I want. I know there’s a ton of free basic courses/tutorials out there on how to use it, and I would probably get way more out of it and get less frustrated if I just went through one of those one weekend. H is pretty proficient in Illustrator, so he often helps me. I snack on some chips and the cat tries to as well.
1:00pm: The weather is mild today (upper 40s, sunny, and no wind), so I take a walk around the neighborhood on my lunch break and listen to The Ringer Fantasy Football Show. I have a sandwich and grapes for lunch when I get back.
2:00pm: H gets home with our Panera coffees right as I am getting back to work. He grabbed lunch out today, which cost $11.09. We both go online and book free COVID tests for next week, a few days before our tentative departure date for Christmas.
5:00pm: I have a steadily busy afternoon of work, but I get everything done. After work, I browse Etsy for a Christmas gift for a friend and land on a cute London-themed tea towel; we and our spouses were supposed to go to London together earlier this year and are hoping we can still make the trip happen next year. It’s coming from the UK, so shipping is expensive; the total comes out to $27.38. I don’t know if it will arrive before Christmas, but I don’t think I’ll see this friend to give it to her until after Christmas anyway.
6:00pm: Dinner is...you guessed it, leftovers. We finish off the enchiladas. Normally I would do a lot more cooking in a week, but I’ve just happened to make several meals lately that created a lot of leftovers.
8:00pm: Quiet evening at home. H has some work to do tonight from home; I read Dune and scroll Reddit for a while. I edit a short essay. H finishes wrapping my Christmas gifts and we hang out for a while.
11:00pm: We chat with some friends in a group text before eventually heading to bed.
Total: $38.47
At the end of each day please tally up your daily expenses. Then at the end of your diary please tally up all expenses in the following categories:
Food + Drink: $127.10
Fun / Entertainment: $13.70
Home + Health: $74.76
Clothes + Beauty: $165
Transport: $22.29
Other (all gifts): $187.38
Lastly, reflect on your diary! How do you feel about your spending? Was this a normal week for you? Has this inspired you to make changes or has it given you a “wow I’m doing pretty good” confidence boost? Is there anything you’re actively working on? No need to answer any or all these questions but just use this space to write any thoughts you have!
There are some outliers here as far as spending goes because of the gift purchases and the hair appointment which only comes around every 4-5 months, but beyond that, this was pretty normal weekly spending for us. Interestingly, I felt more self-conscious about sharing what I ate than about anything money-related--I tend to think of myself as a fairly healthy eater but I don't think that was the case this week!

I am researching this Linux OSs, I want your thought or recommends from knowledge experience

Hello dear Reddit peoples, Me I am moving from Windows 10, for reasons I want more control over my computer, no update forcing, no Windows tracking/insecure things, more privacy, and try something new.
This things I am wanting from distrobution - More privacy, security than from Windows. This is new thing for me, I don't want micro-soft google tracking, data stealing and things, maybe also protection from future organizations governments that surveal people all the time. Also less blote-progams such as Edge that you can not delete. - Maybe more better performace than from Windows, for example now I am not running much program but 75% of RAMs are used, Windows use all of hard drive for many times. - A nice look and using experiences, maybe this a bit like Windows, but I want dark theme, what your cool hacker gaming friend with Matrix code many monitors look like, if you can understand. - What do I not like more than windows, this is the Apple-mac... Me I have tried the Mint Linux, the Ubuntu Linux this file system look too like Apple-mac or child play thing. I am trying to find a Linux that does not look or feel like Apple-mac, but feel real in useage. - Me I don't do gaming, this is not worrying for me. - I want to be different from the other people, I want to learn using computers programs and this without this easy laziness way people have now. Remember with windows xp this crashing, having to find guides on using fixing things this was fun challenge and teach you abit of computer works. But also something that works and is logical
Me I have look for some distrobutions and list this below as possible, maybe do you have any comment on this from using them or knowing them Debian Kali Lubuntu Pure Pop OS Qubes Zenwalk Kubuntu Zorin Manjaro Solus
Yoh how does you people decide from all of this! Yes I now have to decide from this list or maybe suggestions from you. Maybe do I download all of this and over weeks try each one. iF you use how do you find this ones in using?
What is stopping me from moving to the Linux, well this is I paid for Windows and it work ok daily, thinking why should I change this. Also I am worryed of problems coming, things my old programs not working, things breaking and generallity harder longer to use. Also concerns of chosing wrong Distrobution and regret from changing from the Windows, maybe there is ideas people can change my fears.

You may ask what do I do on my computer, this is general things such as internet browsing, Utube watch, website reading. Also writing with Word program, watching videos listen to music. For programs using I do use mainly a music writing program, Audacity audio edit, small some video edit, general files work. Maybe also in future to start beginner coding programming things. As I say no gaming needs.

I have questions maybe there are people who can help (I am new to this things): - For programs I want to instal, when they say Linux download on download page, will this work on all Linux distributions, or must you have to find specific program file for individual distros? - how do I know what things will work with my computer and the distribution? for example I see sometimes people they say a Wifi or blutooth or battery this won't work on their distrobution - What are some things I must know before moving or choosing to Linux? - Do you know of good extensive guides or comparisons overviews, maybe what have helped you? I don't want to ask many question posts and make the people irritated, iwant to try things without irratating peoples. - How is crypto, Bitcoins things on Linux? I am woried about this things affecting wallet keys, this like malware, secret programs to steal clipboard, or private crypto keys. Also keylogger worries. - Also how is virus security generally with the Linux's - How does one open your many files kinds once on the Linux, for example word, PDF, mp3 mp4, txt, jpeg, png, avi, xls, zip this files kinds. Must you convert this all to Linux files before moving so you can open this in Linux?
My technicals ability, I am computer useing from the Windows xp many years ago. I use Ubuntu years ago, use a Linux in Virtual machine, and with a internet guide I can use this Command line coding to do a few things. Maybe I am best in my family and friends on computers, but this I say I am just more than average person and I explore and try varied things. I have use ISO file images to install OSs before this is not new to me at least.
My computer this is a good average lap-top from few years ago, this is Lenovo lap-top, 8gb Rams, Intel i3-6006u 2GHz 64bits, I have 500gb drive, I use usually external screen also, graphics is what computer come with Intel HD graphics 520, it has 4gb RAMs.
I thank you for reading and maybe commenting advising, this is long post but I want to post just once. Advancing thanks to you, I hope to start with Linux well and can comment assist for people soon.

So it happened, the dark soul withered (spoilers, I think... lol)

So I must preface this with my ps4 is fucked.
The disk drive motor has gone, the HD port on the machine is broken, it can't connect to any WiFi anymore, it likes to randomly switch off, sometimes switch on and it likes to spit discs out (which is great when the motors fried) also the hard disk really struggles to write anything really
For example if I wanna download a 6gb game, eg mount and blade, at a 79mb hardwired connection that will take about 24 hours maybe closer to 30 hours. Recently downloaded fallout 76 which is 80+ gb that took 4 days plus, so yeah it's a bit fucked It's been on its last legs for a while but no stock for ps5 means I'm stuck with it for now.
I started my first SL1 run for any game in the series, choose to do ds2 as for me it's head and shoulders the best, yeah 3s fun and demons souls OG has a nice feel like 2 does but its always been top dog souls game for me.
Iv been going pretty well found it quite easy to begin with, smashed str8 through everything until I hit mythra I think?... her name escapes me but the medusa poison snake women, never really struggled there before but took some serious attempts to get past her, back on my merry way, no real trouble atall all the way up to and past Velstadt. Apart from one thing, if I die anywhere near drangliec Castle, it would attempt to spit the disk out tell me the game is corrupted and to delete it.
First few times just popping the game back on would make it work till I died, then eventually got to the point it would corrupt before hitting the load screen.
So then I had to delete it, reinstall it, play then as soon as I died an it started to reload would corrupt and I would have to repeat the process, also the "hidden bonfire" near twin dragonriders corrupted my game everytime so I had to run from beginning after deleting and reinstalling lol Left drangliec all good again.
At this point iv got the peasant set with cales helm equipped for +6 ADP +2 DEX +1 END I have the DEX ring, ring of embedded, life ring (I know) and switching between chloranthory and flynns when needed for VIG +7 VIT +7 END +7 DEX +5
So I'm doing well, or well enough at least, so I thought to myself let's go and get the 3rs dragon ring, or whatever its called, the 1 that raises hp, stam, and equip to replace my life ring
BIG MISTAKE
Get myself over to aldias pad, fly through there, get rid of ancient wyvern unharmed by poking its knees with my rapier. Reach dragon aire, collect the teleporting feather of fukyouu proceed past to dragon shrine. Met the flamingballsack again, take out first Knight, up the stairs hit the second big boy.
This turned out to be the last moment I could enjoy
Began ascending the 2nd set of stairs towards the actual shrine itself and up pops a message
Cannot save character data press OK to reload or Cancel to return to title screen
So before this iv never ever seen an error message come from darksouls always my PlayStation, however the game carried on behind this on screen message so I went up the stairs attempted to kill the last Knight guy guarding the door but since I couldn't bloody see, he catches me I die......
Game freezes...
I close game, I open game before reaching title screen I'm presented with, cannot load character, save file corrupt press yes to reload or no to delete save file....
So I press yes 9,562,321 times, each time just arrives back at same message
Close game check the file itself "Corrupted data"
Finally starts sinking in my 1 an only attempt at my favourite game at SL1 is gone, then I get pissy, start thinking when the fuck will I have a ps5 to do this run agajn, will I even be able to play it on a 5? As iv still not had confirmed weather ps5 is actually backwards compatible or if its just the top 200 games
A little light goes on though, wait ps plus is always uploading bollox let's have a look
Oh look 3 days ago a save uploaded from DS2, start considering how much iv done in the last 3 days but don't care, get it back get back at it...
Downloading save data 7 seconds 6 5 4 3 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 Cannot download
Attempt this 3 or 4 more times, same result.... Goes to next uploaded save i have downloads 4 3 2 1 Done
OK that file was from a game I dint have installed
Deleted ds2. Deleted the corrupted file Attempted to redownload the 3 day old DS file... 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 1 1 1 1 Cannot download.
And that is the end of my shitshow of a story, sorry to waste your time but am livid, distraught and questioning my entire life and reason for existence right now, so good to vent I suppose

What is DIGITS? A guide for the most confusing T-Mobile Feature.

What is DIGITS? A guide for the most confusing T-Mobile Feature.
Hi! Welcome to my guide to DIGITS. Let me start by saying I do not work for T-Mobile, but I do use DIGITS heavily, I was a beta tester, and I have confirmed many points with staff before posting this guide.

This guide will have TL;DR's for each section, then more technical details mostly intended for T-Mobile employees and nerds. If you're just a customer trying to understand the basics, stick to the TL;DR's. Each section starts with an image with a cute character and a question.

https://preview.redd.it/df5in48gbzu51.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=3658f12de560dfe6a9234cbe8cea3a045211959a
TL;DR: DIGITS is a family of tools and services which allow customers to use phone numbers more flexibly than before, on multiple devices, and/or with multiple numbers per device. It's not one thing, and there are many different use cases and possibilities with DIGITS. DIGITS is just an umbrella term for the whole suite of services, not the name of any one use.

One of the biggest misconceptions about DIGITS is that it's just one thing. Some people only know DIGITS as that thing where you can use an app to put your number one more than one phone, and other people only know DIGITS as that thing that let's you get an extra phone number, without realizing both of these, and more scenarios, are all just types of DIGITS. DIGITS itself is just the blanket name for the entire family of products offered.

I'll get into each scenario separately below, but for now just keep in mind that DIGITS is not one thing. Some uses cost money, some do not. Some can be used by all T-Mobile customers, some can not. DIGITS as a whole is just the program T-Mobile launched which separates phone numbers from SIM cards, allowing these more flexible options.

https://preview.redd.it/7vvlj6t8ezu51.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=00ddd5c820c97f2ca06effd4ea5b455d3ea7616f
TL;DR: DIGITS has many common scenarios, including adding a new (extra) phone number to your phone, using your existing phone number on other phones with their own existing service (even non-T-Mobile phones), and using your existing phone number on new phones that didn't previously have service at all. DIGITS for wearables also enables number sharing, with smart watches!

Adding a new phone number to your existing device requires adding a new line of service called a DIGITS T&T LINE, which costs $10/mo. PROXY by DIGITS is just a free, rebranded T&T line.

Using your existing T-Mobile phone number on a second existing device with its own existing cellular service requires downloading the DIGITS app from the App Store or Play Store. This is free for all T-Mobile postpaid customers on all voice plans.

Enabling service on a new second device which did not already have cellular service (or a wearable) requires adding a new line of service called a DATA W/ PAIRED DIGITS LINE. This costs $10/mo and can be added to all Magenta, One, and Simple Choice plans. It's internet speeds are slow, but for $20/mo you can add a HIGH SPEED DATA W/ PAIRED DIGITS LINE to all Magenta and ONE TI plans.

That was a pretty long TL;DR! But this will be even longer. If you work for T-Mobile and really wanna know your shit, please keep reading. There are all sorts of fun gotchas and asterisks to get into.

First let's talk about pricing. All those $10/mo and $20/mo assume the customer has autopay. Otherwise they'd each be $5 more. And, even if a customer has autopay T-Mobile limits $5 autopay discounts to 8 per account, or $40 total. So even if a customer uses autopay if they also have 10 lines they will be paying $15 or $25, not $10 or $20. That goes for all types of service with autopay discounts on all consumer plans! Not sure about business plans, you'd need to ask your manager or something.

If the base voice plan is taxes included than all added DIGITS lines will also include taxes and fees. If they are on an older taxes excluded plan, or Essentials, etc, they will be paying taxes and fees on these DIGITS plans too. I think these plans don't charge voice taxes in states that have those, only data line taxes, but I might be wrong about that. I know T-Mobile's billing system does treat all DIGITS lines as data, not voice. Clarification is needed.

Next let's talk about DIGITS T&T lines a bit more. These lines are used when a customer wants to add an extra voice line to their phone. They cost $10/mo ($15 w/o autopay) and can be added to almost any kind of plan. They work with all flavors of Magenta, One, SC, and probably any older voice plan that can add data lines. These lines only work in the DIGITS app, the DIGITS web app (for PCs), and the native DIGITS experience built in to some older LG and Samsung phones. Don't worry about that last point, while there are millions of phones out there with that feature, there's probably a baker's dozen of people in your whole state that use it... I'd be shocked if you ever met a live customer who uses it.

T&T lines do not provide data. They can not be activated on a SIM card or eSIM. They only work in the DIGITS app, as a way to add an extra phone number beyond the voice lines the customer already has. If you are familiar with the new PROXY lines, this is the exact same concept. In fact a PROXY line is a DIGITS T&T line, literally, just with a different name.

All the free DIGITS offers so far, except for the free beta lines, have been for T&T lines ONLY. If a customer has a "free DIGITS line" from their old "Add One Plus for $5 a month and get a free DIGITS line!" offered in, uh, 2017?, or a free DIGITS line that comes bundled with their Amplified plan, or a free DIGITS line they got with their iWireless transition, or any other free DIGITS line offered in the past or today, it's a T&T line. So it won't work on a SIM card or provide data. If the customer thinks it does, they are mistaken.

And of course, since PROXY lines are just rebranded T&T lines, they also do NOT provide data or work in a phone without the app (and its own internet connection).

Now let's talk about the DIGITS app. The app works on iOS and Android, there is a PC version for Windows and Mac, as well as a Web App which works on all of these systems mentioned (yes, even on mobile) as well as some more exotic hardware like the video game systems and those Kiosks that sell lotto tickets in Arizona (yes, I've tried). Signing in uses your existing My T-Mobile account, and will require a SMS verification sent to one of your devices. However, in the event that you lose your phone the SMS can be sent to a different voice line on your account. You only need access to one voice line to get in, then any voice line or DIGITS T&T line linked to your My T-Mobile account can be accessed.

The Primary account holder can link any and all voice lines and DIGITS T&T lines to their own DIGITS log in, however child accounts will need permission from other lines first. Either way, when a line is turned on in a DIGITS app instance the SIM card for that line will get a text message alerting them that someone is using their number in DIGITS. If it's a voice line. T&T lines don't get those alerts.

Multiple people/My T-Mobile IDs on the same account can use the same number. A single line can be active on up to 5 devices total, including SIM cards. In my own experience you can enable more than 5, but things get a bit glitchy. Nothing stops you, but not all calls and texts will make it to all devices with that line enabled if you exceed 5. There was also a limit of 5 lines being activated per app instance, but that has either been lifted or broken, as now you can enable more than 5. I don't know the new limit of lines active per app, but I've done 9 before without issues. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There is no cost to using the app. It works with VoLTE and older GSM voice calls, as well as VOIP on WiFi or non-cellular clients like PCs. It does need internet to work, though. Even though the mobile DIGITS app can work with VoLTE/GSM voice calls using minutes instead of data, it still needs data to initiate the call, as the data connection is used to tell the network what's going on and to change the caller ID of the outgoing call. If a T-Mobile customer uses the DIGITS app on a CDMA phone to place a call, and has their app set to use minutes instead of data, that will also work. In theory it would even work on a 2G cell site, as long as there is also an internet connection before the call is placed.

Without getting too technical, when the app is set to use minutes instead of data the call just uses the phone number of the device itself to place a call like normal, through the standard dialer app, using minutes, but it also sends metadata telling the network to display the caller ID and cell number of the DIGITS line instead. This doesn't always work, but at least on paper, that's how it's supposed to work. For maximum security customers should place calls using data, on a device with an internet only connection. They could dox themselves by mistake when using the minutes feature, as DIGITS is just kinda broken and doesn't always work... don't shoot the messenger, I'm not T-Mobile and I can't speak to why they allow a half baked system to be out there.

My tangent on Native DIGITS, feel free to skip! As mentioned previously, there is also this amazing and rarely used feature called "native DIGITS", also known as built in DIGITS, or as multi-line settings. Sadly, T-Mobile pulled the plug on it in 2019, and Samsung has even removed it from existing devices with the Android 10 update. However, it does still work on some older T-Mobile branded LG and Samsung devices. You will almost certainly never, ever, in an infinite number of lives, meet a living flesh and blood person still using this feature, but just for the sake of full coverage, let's chat about it.

Originally offered on some LG, Samsung, and I think maybe the first Revvl? phones this feature was truly epic. It allowed users to log in to their DIGITS account on their phones directly, in the settings app, just like a Google account or a Samsung account, with no need to download an app. It would display calls and texts on multiple lines in the native, built in dialer and SMS apps of these phones, cleanly, with multiple perks including less app clutter (no DIGITS app! It was just built in to the EXISTING calling and texting apps!), support for some fancy texting features like seeing when the other person is online or typing before this was added to the app, and my personal favorite, legitimate screenshots.

Let me explain that last point. It's bad enough that you might not trust someone so you'd give them a fake or extra number instead of your personal number, but worse, when you use the DIGITS app (or other things like it, such as 2nd Line or Text Now) your screenshots of conversations clearly show you're using a 3rd party app. But with native DIGITS your conversation would look just like any other, in the stock SMS app of your LG or Samsung phone which other people would recognize, which, I don't know maybe it's just me, but that was a killer feature for me. Sure, on my Note 9 there was a small icon added to show it's an extra line, but most people would not know what that is. They'd just see a normal looking, non-sketchy app used to text, which adds legitimacy to whatever happened, vs an obvious fake number with the DIGITS app.

Unfortunately Samsung removed the feature from the Note 9, S9, and Note 8 with the Android 10 update. T-Mobile stopped paying to include the feature after the Note 9, the S10, Note 10 and beyond never had this feature. LG also dropped it when T-Mobile stopped paying to add it, I believe with the G8.

Currently, these phones still support native DIGITS even on the latest system update:
  • Samsung S7
  • Samsung Note 7 (all 3 still out there)
  • Samsung S8/8+
  • LG G6
  • LG G7
  • LG V30/V30+
  • LG V40
  • Maybe the first Revvl?

On phones that support the feature, they must be running the T-Mobile version of their software, and the feature must be "unlocked" online via the DIGITS Portal. They also must be on a T-Mobile postpaid voice line. Even running the T-Mobile software the feature can not be unlocked if the SIM card is missing or from a different carrier.

The feature is also very insecure. When I had it I could request access to numbers I shouldn't have had access to, including data only lines. That's why I'm "DIGITS Breaker" on the T-Mobile Discord server. I used the poorly coded and maintained native DIGITS on my Note 9 to unlock access to the phone numbers on multiple data lines on my account, not just voice lines. I also had access to a phone number on a voice line which I added for a Costco AAL deal then cancelled, and even after cancelling the line from my account I could still use it in my native DIGITS. Really. Some other person got that number a few months later and I started getting texts from his girlfriend. And I could answer them. The fact that it's even possible is, scary. But T-Mobile doesn't care about native DIGITS anymore and isn't updating it, so uh, hopefully no one reading this is interested in identity theft! Because man, that feature is super insecure. /rant

Time to discuss Data w/ Paired DIGITS! This is the option where customers can activate a new line to share their number with a second device which does not already have service. It costs $10/mo ($15 w/o autopay) for the slow version, or $20/mo ($25 w/o autopay) for the high speed version. This plan gives the customer a new SIM card which shares the same phone number as one of their voice lines. It works natively, so no app is required.

The slower version, known as "Data w/ Paired DIGITS" can be added to any Magenta, One, or Simple Choice plan, and possibly even older grandfathered plans. It includes unlimited data at 512 Kbps (or maybe 600 Kbps? But I think it's 512 Kbps) and minutes and texts used count against the voice line it's mirroring. When someone calls that voice line both SIMs ring at the same time. As well as any app instances. This line can be used in wearables, tablets, and phones. It's probably not a good fit for smartphones and tablets since it's so slow, but it will work, it is compatible 100% and intended for use in phones and tablets, it is not only for watches. And some people may only need the slow speed option, for example to get calls on a flip phone or car radio system. They'd just be wasting money if you tried to get them on the HS plan.

The High Speed Data w/ Paired DIGITS option is exactly the same as the option above, but data is full speed, subject only to network management at 50 GB. This type of DIGITS line is $20 and can not be added to Simple Choice or ONE TE plans. Only to Magenta and ONE TI. I'm not too sure about Essentials, it may or may not work there. I asked 5 reps on T-Force and got 5 answers so, who knows. This plan also works in all the same devices but is targeted more at phones and tablets, it would be a bit overkill for watches (except for the Apple Watches, those can take better advantage of the faster speeds).

This option can be very handy for devices like flip phones which may not have the ability to use the app or web app, since the DIGITS stuff is handled by the SIM and network. To the device, it just places a call or sends a text like normal, no DIGITS app needed! It may also be cheaper than adding a voice line, depending on the situation with the customer, and it can be added without impacting how many voice lines the customer has, since some numbers of voice lines can require a plan change, which could also mean losing promos, but DIGITS lines can be added safely. And, it's a great option for customers who've maxed out their voice lines, since consumer postpaid T-Mobile accounts are all eligible for up to 20 DIGITS lines, separate from their voice line and data line limits. These lines do need to share a number with an existing voice line, but it's still an option for someone with 12 voice lines who wants even more phones.

These lines can not be used in T-Mobile Tuesdays, and can't add on One+ or Magenta+. But they can often be used for EIP phone promos! Great option for BOGO deals that require one new line and one existing line, since the DIGITS line can often be used as the existing line if other voice lines already have EIP deals.

https://preview.redd.it/0wm9q5n850v51.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=979c17cf24ca07d129f20f57c0f4b81d821774fb
TL;DR: Yes. Enabling a voice line in DIGITS will send an alert to that person's phone, SMS 2FA is required to sign in to DIGITS, and high security short code texts don't get forwarded to DIGITS instances of numbers. Things can still go wrong though, so read beyond the TL;DR if you're paranoid.

Oh boy, security. Always a fun topic. "Can people spy on me?" is a valid question, and for the most part the answer is no, but let's get into the nitty gritty. When you sign in to the app or web app you have to have access to one of your voice lines in person, to get a SMS to confirm your identity. So you don't need to worry about a complete stranger hacking into your DIGITS account, at least. Once you're signed in, you also have to have access to other lines on the account to turn them on. The account holder can grant themselves access, but any other lines with their own account need permission first from the other line.

As an example, say Dad is the account holder, and on his account he also has Jessica and David, his two kids. Dad's My T-Mobile ID, which is the same as his DIGITS account, can access Jessica and David's lines if needed. He can grant himself access. However, if Jessica has her own My T-Mobile ID, she can only access her line, and to get access to even look at other lines, say David's, she would need to request permission first via the DIGITS Portal.

This still does not totally rule out a nosey parent spying on their kids, though. The account holder can use DIGITS to spy, however the kids (or whoever) would get a text message which would tell them someone is now accessing their number in DIGITS, so you'd know. Sure, they could also delete the text on your phone, but that's really getting conspiratorial... and they'd need your phone, if they can unlock your phone to delete a text then they could also just check your phone in the first place and not even use DIGITS!

Don't worry, though. You can sleep easy tonight, maybe. It is possible for the account holder or other "authorized users" to call 611 and speak to the tech support department. Not the regular team of experts, but the specific tech support people. You can ask them to block numbers on the account from DIGITS, and then they will never be able to be used again within DIGITS! This is great for college friends splitting an account or families with trust issues.

Although, my own anecdotal experience tells me this is not fool proof, as I did this some time ago to prevent myself from accidentally turning on my own daughter's line, since it would freak her out to think I was spying on her when I am not that kind of mom, and I have a lot of lines so, I just wanted her line off entirely, and, well, about 5 months ago it reappeared magically! It was genuinely disabled, I couldn't even see it in my account holder DIGITS portal, but now it's back. So, uh... yeah it's not perfect. But that's just me, I am not aware of this being a wide spread issue.

Another point to keep in mind: although short code SMS messages are blocked in all instances of DIGITS access, both app and physical second SIMs, other methods sometimes used by companies to confirm ownership of a phone number like calls with spoken codes, or SMS like those used by Facebook with normal 10 digit numbers, are not blocked.

I would not worry. DIGITS is far from the least secure thing most of us use every day, there are far easier ways for people to hack or spy on you.

Time for some FAQ's! Some of these may have already been answered above, but not everyone will have time to read this entire 4414 word post... and I can't say I blame them.

Q: Do DIGITS lines include data?
A: Only the "Data w/ Paired DIGITS" lines do. The "DIGITS T&T" lines, or the free "PROXY" lines, do not. Those only offer an extra phone number for use in the DIGITS app. The "Data w/ Paired DIGITS" lines offer a second SIM card with data and full service for a second phone or device.

Q: Does DIGITS cost money?
A: Sometimes. If you just want to download the app on a second phone you already have service on so both ring with one number, no that's free. Enabling any and all of your existing voice lines on other devices with the app is always free. If you want even more phone numbers adding a DIGITS T&T line costs $10/mo with autopay, although ONE and Magenta customers can get one free PROXY line per account, which is just a T&T line anyways. Sweet! You also need to pay if you want a second SIM with the same number, which is $10/mo with autopay for the slow kind, and $20/mo with autopay for the fast kind. Slow and fast refer to the internet speeds.

Q: What is a PROXY DIGITS line?
A: It's just a normal DIGITS T&T line, rebranded. It's an extra phone number with no physical SIM, which can be activated in the DIGITS app or web app by anyone on your account with access granted to them. It works for calls and texts, but not for short codes. No DIGITS access will work with short codes.

Q: Should I really worry about people spying on me with DIGITS?
A: Nah. Like I said, it's technically possible, but it's already a PITA to do, and you can always call 611 to turn off DIGITS for your line if it really worries you.

Q: Will Sprint customers get DIGITS?
A: Probably, yes. Right now they can't use it, not with ROMAHOME, not with the TNX, only if they go to a T-Mobile Store and fully transition their account to a T-Mobile account on a current T-Mobile plan. However, I personally suspect that at some point all Sprint customers will be fully T-Mobile customers, with T-Mobile billing and T-Mobile accounts, on their current grandfathered plans. At that point, when you can sign in to My T-Mobile with your Sprint number, then you should have DIGITS as well, since they are the same login info.

Q: Why are the masks on the characters not the ones they actually gave out on Tuesday?
A: Ok, lol, probably no one asked. But, it's because I've been researching and planning for this post for months, and at the stage when I had my comic artist rework these old assets into modern COVID friendly ones, there was no official T-Mask. Now there is, but it's not worth the time and money to redo them a second time. No one is paying me to do this, it's just a labor of love. <3

Q: Is there any point in a T&T line? Why not use a free app like Text Now?
A: That's a great question! When LG and Samsung phones still had native DIGITS built in I think the answer was a clear yes, it is worth it because of the experience. Now though, it would be a harder sell. If you can get a free one with your amplified plan, there is no reason not to. Unlike apps like Text Now, DIGITS T&T lines never expire, don't run ads, don't sell your text messages to 3rd parties, and work with sync on many devices. For $10/mo though, I think you would struggle to justify it unless you really need a number that syncs on many devices, that's the strongest selling point, in my opinion.

Q: I love DIGITS! How many lines can I add to my postpaid account?
A: 20. You can add 20 DIGITS lines. Even if you already have 12 voice lines and 5 mobile internet lines, DIGITS get their own line limit of 20. So I guess you could have 37 total lines. Seems excessive bro, but the High Speed Data w/ Paired DIGITS is genuinely a cool way you could get around a 12 voice line limit if you needed too, so long as it's 12 or fewer people and you just need more phones per person. People rarely mention that selling point.

That's the end! Thanks so much for reading this far! I really hope this can help clear up some confusion, DIGITS is really a powerful tool, and I think a lot more people would enjoy it if they just understood it! Feel free to discuss further in the comments, too!
